The Wellington Racing Club's summer meeting was continued to-day in warm weather. There was again a large attendance. The track was in fast order, and there were some finishes. The sum of £44,905 (win £20,986 10s, place £23,918 10s) was handled. The second day last year was Anniversary Day, a public holiday, when £76,291 was handled, and on the third day, a Saturday, £69,223 10s was put through. This year Anniversary Day falls on Saturday, so that the total turnover will suffer through the clashing of the two holidays. Journet Wins In the Mungaroa High-weight Handicap the three placed horses all returned good dividends. Charade was the pacemaker until well into tne straight, where she gave way to convivial and Nightlass, with Huskie, The Surgeon, Journet. and Lustral in handy positions. Nightlass appeared to be the winner 50 yards from the post but had to submit to a belated effort by Journet, who just got up to secure a head verdict. Lustral was a close third, clear of Huskie, The Surgeon, and Southern Blood in a bunch, with Convivial heading the remainder. First Success Play On was confidently supported to win the Trial Plate, but was squeezed back at the start, and after improving his position through the middle stages, he entered the straight in the middle of the track, and was never in the firing line. Haile Selassie was the early leader, and led into the straight from Earlscourt, Flame Queen. Thala. Le Toquet. and Jewish Lad. The leader was done with at the distance, and Thala, Flame Queen, Mulatto, and Le Toquet closed on Earlscourt. In an interesting tussle. Le Toquet pushed through on the rails to win narrowly from Thala. who juSt shaded Mulatto. Flame Queen was two lengths away, in front of Twilight Song, Earlscourt, and Amatory. Led Throughout Oratory won the January Handicap from end to end in the fast time of lmin 36sec, which is easily a course record, and equals the New Zealand record put up by Courtcraft at the recent Auckland meeting. Roaming was always her nearest attendant, and was the only other contestant to keep her up to her work; but Oratory was never in danger of being overhauled. Valamito ran into third place inside the distance. Wildflower cut him out of Ihird money in the last few strides. Alunga, Boomerang, and Alby were next. Alma v/as slow away and was in third place turning for home, but did not carry on very Tar, and was the last to finish. Haughty Winner was always well back. Last to First Alloa, with a seven pound allowance, gave a sterling performance to win the Camp Handicap. He was slow to move off, and was in last place until the field swept into the straight. He then gradually made up ground, and tackling Lord Nuffield, who led from Jhe early stages, a few strides from the post secured a length verdict, with the latter hanging on to hold off Accomplice, who was always Lord Nuffield's closest attendant. Lazybones was in the firing line over the last furlong, and looked likely to be dangerous, but weakened into fourth place nearing the line. Pekoe, Sunbeam, Great Quex, and Double Gift were next, Kelly's Handicap Speculation was well distributed in the Pacing Club Handicap, but all calculations were upset by Kelly. He took charge from tne start and, leading the field throughout, stayed on to score a most attractive victory. He had a three-lengths' break on Round Up, Linguist. Sunee, Lowenberg, Hunting Cat, Cerne Abbas,-and Padishah in that order; but none of his pursuers appeared anxious to bridge the gap. Even when the straight was reached, it appeared as if Kelly was expected to come back to the field. Kelly, however, showed no signs of slackening his pace, and although solidly challenged by Lowenberg and Round Up, he comfortably held them off, and had half a length to spare at the post from Lowenberg, Who beat Round Up by a little wider margin. Padishah and Cerne Abbas finished abreast, practically in line with Round Up, and there was then a big gap to Hunting Cat, Linguist, and Sunee. The winner was ridden by G Gilchrist, a son of the trainer. He is one of the smallest boys riding, and received an Ovation on returning. Defaulter Impresses Ivar, Amigo. and Surmount accounted for the bulk of the investments on the Nursery Handicap, but all were beaten by Defaulter. Surmount was first to show out, and he led on to the course proper from Ivar, Amigo, and Defaulter. Surmount was in trouble early in the run home, and Amigo drew out from Ivar; but Defaulter, hugging the rails, soon wore Amigo down, and went away from him to record one of the easiest wins of the meeting, while Amigo as easily accounted for Ivar. Dunmanway finished on from the rear to be close up to Ivar, with Eastern Heir and Surmount tailing off. Defaulter carried overweight to secure the services of L. J. Ellis, and Won with a good deal in hand. Amigo put up a sound fight under his big weight, but Surmount failed badly. Lady Ina's Decisive Win Ben Braggie was sent out a good favourite for the Metropolitan Handi' cap, but after leading on to the course proper, and looking all over a winner 100 yards from the post, he was gradually overhauled by Lady Ina who went On to record a decisive Win. Triune finished fast on the inside to get within half a head of Ben Braggie, with Top Row in the middle of the track a head away. Laughing Lass. Icing, ai'd Grey Honour followed at intervals. Mild Surprise The biggest dividend of the meeting was returned by Mishna in the Douro Cup, for which Chicket, Silver River, and Lickem had a close contest for favouritism. When the field had covered two furlongs. Silver River took charge from Relative, Mishna, Wagner, and Nightdress, and this was the order into the straight. Mishna closed on Silver Rivet inside the distance, and the pair had the finish to themselves, Mishna staying on the better. In a hard struggle for third money, Good Sun got Up to beat Relative and Nightdress. Lickem, Tailhght, and Balmenter were next The fourth choice, Studley Royal, was last away, and was always well back.

TUE-F GOSSIP

Argentic suffered from soreness after his race in the Wellington Cup, and he will not be started to-morrow. Tt is intended to put him aside for a long spell on his return to Riccarton.

A Satisfactory Change Three of the Chokebore representatives at Trentham yesterday, Mulatto, Lazybones, and Nightdress, all ran improved races. Mulatto showed her best form this season. Lazybones threatened danger in his race until he weakeued nearing the post. Nightdress was always handy in the Douro Cup, and although well beaten at the finish he put up a more solid fight than on the first day. Loss of Form

Haughty Winner made a very poor showing in the January Handicap at Trentham yesterday, and appears to have lost all form. There is a possibility of his being sold to go into another Riccarl'Jii stable. A Contrast

Rabble evidently races best when fresh, as yesterday he was never prominent and showed none of his first day's form. A Useful Effort

Lord Nuffield made a big improvement yesterday compared with his showing on the first day, and only gave in to Alloa in the last few strides. Below Expectations Sunbeam was prominent for most of the journey in his engagement at Trentham yesterday, and looked a likely place-getter at one stage of the run home, but failed to carry on. He may do better to-morrow.

Impressive Win Defaulter recorded a very impressive win at Trentham yesterday. He has not had as much experience as some of the North Island juveniles, but from a staying viewpoint he is entitled to be considered the most promising of those he met yes'terday. He certainly received substantial poundage from Amigo, but by the manner in which he beat the Beau Pcre colt the result would not have been different if the pair had met on even weights.

Reminders Nominations for the Canterbury Jockey Club's summer meeting will close at 5 p.m. to-day. Nominations for the Dunedin Jockey Club's summer meeting will close at 5 p.m. on Tuesday.

Last of the Limonds When the filly from Variable was disposed of at the yearling sales on Wednesday, the last was seen of Limond's representatives in a yearling sale ring in Now Zealand. There were six lots by the defunct sire offered and they averaged 469 guineas. This year's sale provided the first occasion for some years that Limond was deposed of the top price honour, but no doubt the Waterwings colt would have realised more than 1000 guineas but for an unsightly blemish on one of his forelegs, the after-effect of a wire-fence injury. A New Sire

Tn Ringmaster, Mr G. M. Currie evidently has a good substitute for Limond, as his stock oti Wednesday, the first to represent him in a sale ring, provoked keen competition, and the four submitted averaged 637 guineas. Three of them will have their new home in Australia and the highest priced one of the quartet will be trained by T. H. Gillett at Riccarton for Mr E. Hay. Not Offered Included in the withdrawals from Wednesday's yearling catalogue were a bay filly by Myosotis from Distrait, and a colt by the same sire from Spotlight. Progeny of Myosotis made their debut at the sale, and they attracted attention, but no doubt the Spotlight colt would have materially helped to put the Riccarton sire more on the bloodstock map. Not for Mr Firth

A paragraph in this column yesterday stated that it was understood that two colts by Beau Pere purchased at the Trentham yearling sales by Pyne, Gould, Guinness, Ltd., were bought for Mr A. K. Firth. "The Press" is asked to state that this is not correct. The colts wore not bought for Mr Firth; but Tor Mr T. H. Lowry.

TROTTING NOTES

Reminder Acceptances for the first day of the Nelson Trotting Club's meeting will close on Monday at 8 p.m. Change of Stables The latest addition to S. A. Edwards's team is Eighteen Carat, a pacer recently trained by M. C. McTigue at Methven. During the present season Eighteen Carat has shown fair form for three seconds and a third, and his displays have indicated that he wiU continue to pay his way for some time to come. A reliable and good stayer, he should not be long in making a return to the winning list. Another Chance

Dame Fortune has been sent to join E. Todd's team at Wyndham after being worked for a while by her owner. At one stage of her career a good future was predicted for the Drusus mare, but she had a nervous temperament, and on race days she seldom Rave of her best. Since she last raced she has reared a foal by Rey de Oro, and it is now expected that she will settle down to perform more soldily. She is a sister to the Winton Cup winner Carver Doone, and she has plenty of ability.

Logan Pointer Strain Old Faithful, a winner at the recent Timaru meeting, is the only one of Logan Fraser's stock to race to date, and he has been successful on two occasions. In his last start he proved himself to be a greatly improved pacer, and he can be expected to give further good performances. Although he was not a great success as a racehorse, largely because of misfortune, Logan Fraser is a highly-bred horse and he is one of the very few of Logan Pointer's stock to remain entire. In Old Faithful he has a pacer who should draw attention to his credentials as a sire.

Handsome Two-year-old One of the most attractive two-year-olds seen to this stage of the season has made his appearance at Addington in a colt by Sir Guy from a mare by Author Dillon from Miss Worth. A dark chestnut, he promises to develop into a handsome horse, and in the easy work that has been given him to date he has shown a natural ability to pace, moving nicely with a suggestion of speed. His sire was a game and good racehorse. Miss Worth is an American importation by Axworth from Miss Alma Mater, by Peter the Great. This colt is the first of Sir Guy's stock to be seen at Addington, and he is a credit to that young sire.

Back at Addington After a period under E. J. Smith at Prebbleton without showing any signp of returning to form, Garner was transferred to R. B. Berry's stable with no better results, and she has now been returned to her owner, E C. McDermott, who has placed her back in work at Addington. For some time now Garner's track work has been of a high standard, but she has failed to race up to her early good form, and it was thought that a change of stables might bring about the desired improvement. Although she is again in work it is possible that she will not be persevered with for a great time longer, and that shortly she will take her place in the matron's paddock.

Eased in Work As further work may, it is considered, bring about a recurrence of his split' hoof, the trainer of Indianapolis has deemed it wise to ease him in his training, and he will not be seen in action at the Forbury Park Trotting Club's meeting next week. While there is nothing seriously amiss with the Wrack horse at the moment, no chances are being taken with him at this stage, and he will be reserved for the interDominion championships. Had he continued to make good progress in his work it was his owner's intention to send him against the existing mile record on the second day of the Dunedin fixture, but that attraction will now be missing. However, with Cloudy Range, Tempest, Rongomai, and Royal Doulton all claiming engagements, Mr G. J. Barton will be will represented at Forbury Park, and he will give that club his usual strong support. CLIFDEN R.C.
