HEAVY FIGHTING CONTINUED ON MANY FRONTS
Severance of Diplomatic Relations Now Completed
Reports from Hankow suggest that the Chinese Prime Minister (Dr. H. H. Rung) is leaving to the Japanese the initiation of any steps for a settlement of the conflict. Dr. Rung stated that the suspension of hostilities was necessary before there could be any negotiations with Japan.
Meanwhile Chinese flying columns continue to harass the Japanese communications in the Yangtse and Yellow river areas, and a Chinese offensive is directed against Wuhu.
It is reported that large concentrations of Chinese troops are being effected in Shantung with the object of resisting the Japanese attack in this area. It is stated that 400,000 Chinese have massed to prevent the junction of the Japanese north and south armies.
The recall of the Japanese Ambassador from China js confirmed in a message from Tokyo. It is reported that the Chinese Ambassador (Mr Hsu Shih-ying) will leave Tokyo to-day.
