MINISTER
[From Our Parliamentary Heporterj
WELLINGTON, January 19.
If the English market needs man New Zealand meat, and can give an assurance of a steady demand at ft* higher rate, the New Zealand Government will undertake to meet the new requirements. This was plain!; stated by the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage), in an interview this evening, when commenting on the claims from England that New Zealand was not sending the quota of meat promised. Mr Savage was shown the cablegram from London in which Mr C A. Coggan, president of the National Federation of Meat Trades, said that instead of sending the quota pmmised “they (New Zealand fames) refrained from killing sheep became they found wool more valuable that meat.” Mr Coggan suggested Out the time had come for the Hone Government to move for awhgtmrtiet increases in import quotas.
“This is the first I have beard flat such a position exists." add Uk Prime Minister. “I do not knot that we are on strike against U& ing meat. I think we could mistake to increase our business ufifc Great Britain if she is bursting * do that. We will undertake to mate arrangements that will be toad while if they want more meet Into us. If we have any guarantee d an increased market, with a actained demand, we win make provision accordingly. I think that fie Government could manage that M right. We would want a giwntotee of a sustained increase, became i would not do for us to be asked to meet a heavily increased demand and then find the bottom drop ad of the market suddenly.** ‘
