The Press Junior THURSDAY, JANUARY 20, 1938. The Junior Lawn Tennis Championships

After four successive days of ideal weather the New Zealand junior ton tennis championships were concluded at Wilding Park on Saturday afternoon. This is the Srrf timp the championships have been played at Wilding Park, the perfect lawn tennis courts in Near Zealand; and Christchurch lawn fwiTiis enthusiasts were able to see some very interesting and competent play in the various •vents. Until recently it has been n«ai«l to hold Dominion senior and junior championships in the same Centre and at the same time. And while this year’s experiment has given those interested a particularly good tournament to watch it has left die players without the very valuable experience of seeing jpwwwr championship play and of mfafcy with the senior players to get hints and advice from them. Junior players of championship ■natch class will not need to be advised to watch senior match play to learn all that is possible; but all other young players should be reminded from time to time Of this important part of their training for expert playing ability in lawn tennis. Among those who visited the courts during the last week’s championship play were many young people who will hope to be competitors themselves within the next few years.! These as well as all other Canterbury players would be gratified by’ the fine performance of Meat Kathleen Armstrong, who was by far the best player in the girls’ section and who won her angles with ease and made an excellent partner for S. N. Painter, of Wellington, in the mixed doubles. The play of these two competitors gave Wellington and Canterbury many of the points that won for the two provinces the honours in the finals. Miss Armstrong’s performance has been praised by many critics and expert senior players; she is fifth oh the Canterbury ranking list now. and it is expected that she will be chosen to play in a junior twin in Australia and that she will be an important competitor in senior championship play next The steady and successful play of S. N. Painter, of Wellington. also drew much favourable comment from the experts present. This young player won t|ie boys’ singles championship for file third time, and won three events- in these championships—the boys’ singles, the doubles (with B. J. Kelly of Wellington), and the mixed doubles with Miss Armstrong. Such a record is an exceptional one for a junior player, yet he will still be eligible for file junior events next year. ifigaM H. and D. Elsom, of Canterbury, were the winners of the girls’ doubles finals, and with experience these very promising ywng players will reach high pnfHimrm in Canterbury tennis. fKimm i~> ffenm js only 14 years
