STANLEY MCKAY’S “GAIETIES”

♦ “THE NAVY’S IN TOWN” “The Navy’s in Town,” the current revue staged by Stanley McKay’s “Gaieties” Vaudeville and Revue Company at St. James’ Theatre, is nightly drawing big houses, and can be played only for two more performances. It is a delightful presentation with spectacular scenes and colourful costumes. Joe Lawman, Australia’s cleverest whistling and singing comedian, is seen and heard at his best in the many humorous and novel sketches. Singing is a feature of the production, the Big Four, with George Greig at the piano, making a decided hit. The several chaining song scenafe are interpreted by Winnie Edgerton, Alice Bennetto, and Leo Trenette, the brilliant Australian tenor. Prominent in the specialities are Les Diamendos, from Folies Bergeres, Paris, Fredo Freres, Continental acrobatic violinists. Heather Wright, New Zealand’s champion eccentric dancer, James, the cigarette man, Elvy Ferguson, solo violinist, and the popular Hilo Duo, Hawaiian entertainers. An entirely new revue will be presented at Saturday’s matinee. On Sunday night the “Gaieties’’ will take part in a concert in aid of the funds of the Christchurch Municipal Band.
