“ OVER SHE GOES ”

J. C. WILLIAMSON’S NEW COMEDY

REAPPEARANCE OF GEORGE

After appearing here last in “Kid Boots,” George Gee will make his reappearance with J. C. Williamson’s new musical comedy company in the two London musical plays, “Over She Goes” and “Nice Goings On,” which will be staged here for seven nights, beginning on Saturday, January 29. George Gee has appeared in quite a number of English musical comedies, including “The Girl Friend” and “White Horse Inn,” and he has also appeared in a number of talking pictures. When he made his reappearance recently in Melbourne in “Over She Goes,” Mr Gee was accorded one of the biggest welcomes ever received by a visiting artist in that city. In the role of Tommy Tescher Mr Gee has achieved one of his best successes. The part gives the popular comedian outstanding opportunities for creating laughter, and his specialty dances are features of the show. The J. C. Williamson, Ltd., management has evidently surrounded Mr Gee with a very excellent company of singers, dancers, and comedians, including Miss Valerie Hay. from London, Mr Donald Burr, leading juvenile artist from the principal English and New York theatres. Billie Worth, a dashing young soubrette, who is an outstanding favourite with London and New York audiences, and Percy Le Fre. a brilliant light comedian and dancer. “Over She Goes,” written by Stanley Lupino, with music by Billy Mayerl, is comedy of the subtle kind handed out in a distinctly modern manner. An almost breathless speed is maintained in the first set, which opens with a riot of colour on an ensemble in English hunting costumes in the lounge hall of Drewsden Towers. Artistic colour blending between scenery and frocks is a striking feature of the production. There are many gay melodies and good musical numbers in “Over She Goes,” and the dressing throughout is magnificent. The work of the ballet, too, is excellent. A critic in Sydney said that one could cheerfully have seen more of the chorus. The policy of the production, however, is to whisk it on for a lively moment or two and then whisk it off again. This makes for added pace and brightness. The box plans will be opened at the D.I.C. on Wednesday at 9 o’clock. “Over She Goes” will be staged for five nights and on Wednesday afternoon, February 2, and on Friday and Saturday nights. February 4 and 5, and on Saturday afternoon, February 5. “Nice Goings On” will be staged.
