N.Z. WOMEN’S TEAM

TRIAL MATCH PLAYED IN WELLINGTON

(VBESS tSBOCIAXIO* TBLEOK4H.)

WELLINGTON, January 19. Tire New Zealand women’s cricket team which will leave for Sydney tomorrow night to play a series of matches in New South Wales had a useful final practice at the Basin Reserve to-day when they met a team representing the Wellington Women’s Cricket Association. Twelve aside were played to give all members of the New Zealand team a much-needed practice. The game ended in a draw. The weather was unpromising in the morning, but the sun eventually dispersed the clouds and the afternoon was fine and sunny. The-New Zealand team had first use of a firm wicket, but failed to take advantage of its opportunity. J. Fowler (Nelson) and J. Holmes (Wellington) put on 23 for the first wicket. Thomas (Southland) and Blackler (Canterbury) all showed resolution in the dying stages and carried the total to 224 for 10 wickets by 3 o'clock, when I. Pickering, the New Zealand captain, declared the innings closed. Sheridan, who took three wickets for 27 runs off six overs was the steadiest of the Wellington bowlers, though Page, a tall 16-year-old player, captured two for 12 off five overs and it was difficult to understand why this bowler was not kept on longer. Ell, Stenberg, Simons, and Sampson bore the brunt of the attack, and all kept a good length. H. Buck, the Wellington captain, kept wickets well, stumping two players smartly.

A Good Start Buck and Karris opened the Wellragton innings and gave the side a good start by putting on 34 for the first wickei. Here Harris, who had scored 16. fell lbw to Pickering. Buck confidently ran to 32 in quick time, when she was brilliantly thrown out by a fast shot by Blackler from cover point, which hit the stumps. The New Zealand team was fielding well. as shortly afterwards Stenberg was thrown out by Hatchard from www with a "cannon-ball" shot which hit the stumps. Ell was also run out. The best innings on the Wellington side was played by Page, a left-hander, who made some powerful off and cover drives in running to 34, which included five boundary shots. Tasker hit neatly to leg in reaching 19. At the call of time Wellington had l<*t 10 wickets for 151, and the game was left drawn. The best bowler on the New Zealand side was M. Hollis, a tan Otago girl who captured three wickets for 2T runs off 13 overs. P. Blackler < Canterbury i» another right-hand fast-medium bowler, did well in taking three for 39 off 10 overs. Martin (Canterbury), vice-captain of the team, was a medium-paced bowler, who could change flight and pace clew» erly. The detailed scores were:— NEW ZEALAND J. Holmes, st Buck, b Simons .. IS J.
