CHINESE RESUME OFFENSIVE IN MANY AREAS
Determined Effort to Recapture Hangchow HEAVY FIGHTING REPORTED IN TSINING AREA German Attempts to Inaugurate Peace Negotiations The Chinese answer to Japan’s action in severing diplomatic relations has been to resume the offensive simultaneously on several fronts. A serious attempt is being made to recapture Hangchow, where the Japanese are hurriedly sending reinforcements. The Chinese have also launched a vigorous drive towards Wuhu from two points. They have intensified the conflict in the Tsining area, where both sides now claim the possession of the town. It is reported from Hankow that efforts are being made by Germany to induce Japan to propose peace terms which will-be acceptable by the Chinese. It is asserted in Chinese official circles that the Government is willing to discuss reasonable terms provided they recognise Chinese political and territorial integrity. The formation of a formal Government at Peiping is reported to be likely. It is predicted that a new regime under the former Prime Minister (General Chin Yun-peng) will probably be inaugurated in March.
