An unusual experience even in days when air travel is commonplace was that of Mr W. Cecil Prime, Wellington, on Monday, when he was flown to Napier by his daughter, Miss Joyce Prime, a pilot member of the Wellington Aero Club, in the club’s Whitney Straight cabin monoplane. They returned yesterday to Wellington. The group of sunspots which entered the solar disc last week is now approaching the sun’s central meridian, which it will cross to-day, and it can be clearly seen with the naked eye. The total length of the group is fully 200,000 miles, and the breadth at the widest part is about 80,000 miles. Although the amount of kauri gum exported from Auckland in December rose from the particularly low figure established in November, the average price showed a decline. The total amount shipped last month was 127 tons, compared with only 74 tons in November. The average price of gum shipped in December was about £49 a ton, or £4 a ton lower than the November figure. However, as these values are for orders placed several months ahead, the decline does not necessarily refer to last month’s exports. The total amount realised in December was £6233, against the low figure of £3930 in November, and £13,217 in October.
