LOSS FOR LAST QUARTER

Springs-Ellesmere Power Board HEAVY EXPENDITURE ON RENEWALS Although a loss of £992 19s lOd for the quarter was shown at a meeting of the Springs-Ellesmere Electric Power Board on Mpnday, over which Mr A. E. Langdale Hunt presided, it was explained that there had been a heavy expenditure upon renewals, and that there was no need for worry about the board’s position. Th& engineer said that probably £12,000 could be spent on renewals and replacements. The changing of the Motukarara line from one side of the road to the other had cost £6OO. The cost of current for the quarter had been £3042. Mention was made of complaints about fluctuations in the power supply, and the engineer said that there would always be those fluctuations while consumers were allowed to purchase apparatus using more than the normal supply of Current. It was necessary that they should notify the board so that it would know what the actual loading was. Several complaints about power failures and unsatisfactory supply were referred to the engineer for investigation. Correspondence was received from the City Engineer, Christchurch, and the Public Works Department concerning supply to the municipal aerodrome at Harewood, and the engineer stated that arrangements were in hand to proceed with construction work as soon as possible. In regard to the proposal to make concrete poles, the engineer said he expected to receive the detailed designs shortly. He estimated that from 200 to 300 poles a year would be needed for maintenance purposes from the Department of Industries and Commerce that greater use should be made of Do-minion-made insulators was referred to the engineer. LABOUR MEETING AT KAIAPOI A well-attended public meeting was held In the Borough Hall (Kaiapoi) on Monday evening, when an address was given by Mr A. G. Osborne, M.P. for Manukau, on the achievements and future policy of the Labour Party. The Mayor (the RCv. W. H. A. Vickery) presided. At the conclusion a hearty vote of thanks was accorded the speaker, and a motion of confidence in the Government w&t carried.
