AIR SAFETY DEVICE
PARACHUTE WHICH OPENS FROM 200 FEET CTBOif OtTB OWN CORRESPONDENT.) LONDON, December 29. A new parachute which, it is claimed, never fails to open and can be used with safety even at only 200 ft above the ground, has been invented by a Viennese music teacher, Josef Eschner. A demonstration of the parachute was given at an acrodrome_ at Ford, Sussex, recently. A parachutist jumped from an aeroplane at a height of 205 ft above the ground and landed perfectly on his feet without falling over. The inventor was worried about the increase in air accidents, so determined to devote his energies to securing greater safety in the air. His first models contained steel springs, but the new parachute depends on a patented principle in which springs are not involved. It is claimed that the parachute opens instantaneously: that it has no need of a pilot parachute as it opens smoothly without a jerk; that the descent is slower than by existing parachutes; that all present models can be cheaply adapted to operate as this one: and that it can be packed in 10 minutes without special .wrongllfcja^e^
