Mr E. G. Turbott, of the staff of the Auckland War Memorial Museum, will leave Wellington to-day by the steamer Tees for the Chatham Islands. The Minister for Agriculture (the Hon. W. Lee Martin) visited New Plymouth yesterday where he opened the Taranaki Producers' Freezing Company's new buildings. Mr C. E. Critchley, the new Australian Trade Commissioner in New Zealand, arrived at Wellington by the Awatea yesterday. Mr H. F. Herbert was elected chairman of the Canterbury Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals at a meeting of th« society last evening. At present visiting countries in the southern hemisphere, particularly where the climate . is similar to that in his own country, South Africa, is Professor Otto S. H. Reinecke, of Stellenbosch University, who arrived in Wellington by the Awatea yesterday. The purpose of his tour is mainly to study deciduous fruit production in Australia, New Zealand, and the United States. On his arrival in Wellington, Professor Reinecke had just completed a five weeks' tour of Australia, where he covered a vast amount of territory and visited everystate.—Press Association. Members of the indoor and outdoor staffs of the Australian Mutual Provident Society, Christchurch, gathered at Beath's tearooms recently to say farewell to Mr A. O. Russell, who is going on long service leave before his retirement. Mr W. T. Ikin, manager for New Zealand, who had come from Wellington to be present at this function, made a presentation of a silver tea service from the Christchurch staff and a set of crystal from the Australian Mutual Provident staff association. In proposing Mr Russell's health Mr Ikin'made eulogistic reference to Mr Russell's 47 years of service with the society. He was supported in his remarks by several other speakers.
