BOWLS
TOUR OF BRITISH TEAM ARRIVAL IN CHRISTCHURCH TO-DAY Members of the British bowls team which is at present on a tour of the Dominion will arrive in Christchurch this morning by the steamer express from Wellington. The playing strength of the party—which consists of 19 men and 16 women—is four rinks, and their first game in Christchurch will be played this afternoon against rinks from the Canterbury Bowling Club. Members will be the guests of the club during the day. To-morrow, at 2.30 p.m., the party will be given an official welcome by the Mayor, Mr J. W. Beanland, and will later play a series of games against the Christchurch Centre.
The party arrived in Wellington on Saturday from Southampton to commence a tour of the Dominion, which will last until January 11. when they will sail from Wellington for Sydney. Eleven of the team will compete at the Empire Garrv-s to be held in Sydney early next year. They will later visit Melbourne and Adelaide, and will return home via South Africa. The personnel of the party is as follows:—Mr and Mrs F. C. Angel (Wales), Mr R. and Miss H. P. Baines (Ireland), Mr H. H. Child (England) Mr W. Clarke (Ireland), Mr and Mrs J. G. Cuthbert (Scotland), Mr and Mrs D. E. Gardiner (Ireland). Mr G. Hiscock (England). Mr and Mrs E. How (England), Mr and Mrs F. James (Ireland). Mr S. Jones (England) Mr and Mrs C. T. Marcon (England). Mr and Mrs J. B. McAlpme (Scotland). Mrs E. Morris, Mrs M. Mowbray, and Miss Robinson, Mr and Mrs G. W. Powe (England), Mr and Mrs J. C. Reed (America, joined the party at Panama/, Mr and Mrs J. J. Smith (England). Mr E. Shuttle (England), Mr and Mrs E. Tappenden (England), Mr and Mrs A. A. Templeton (Scotland), and Mr R.. Stewart. Brown (Scotland, the organiser of the tour). . „_ _ .. The captain of the team is Mr David Gardiner, of Belfast, vice-chairmanof the Irish Bowling Association. Th? vice-captain is Mr E. Shuttle, who is captain of the Berkshire (England) County Bowling Association. Two members of the party. Messrs R. Barnes and W. Clarke, were members of a team of British bowlers which visited New Zealand in 1926.
