LAWN TENNIS

RANKING LIST GAMES

FINE PLAY AND SOME

SURPRISES

The first ranking matches of the season under the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association's new scheme of competition were played on Saturday at Wilding Park in fine but overcast weather. Both singles and doubles games were held, and many produced a very high standard of play. Some surprise results confirmed early impressions that rivalry for the top places on the lists this season will be very keen The most notable features of Saturday s games were the splendid form of the provincial champion, C. Angas, who lost only two games to H. A. Barnett, and the defeat of H. Dymond-by I. J. Conch in a match for third position. Angas has seldom volleyed better than in his match with Barnett. Although the latter, in his present position as a teacher at Little Rakaia, is able to get little practice, he had enough of his usual persistence and accuracy to make Angas work for every point. Corich Reach's Thiri IMace I. J. Corich; one of the most promising youngsters in the game in Canterbury, reached third position on the ranking list by beating Dymond. In this match he again showed his ability to change a losing game. After Dymond had had the better of hard driving exchanges in the first set, Corich set out to slow down the play. Dymond lost all his former accuracy in the slower rallies and his errors contributed to Corich's easy capture of the second and third sets.

Of the lower games that between C. F. Penfold and R. G. Pattinson for seventh position was most interesting. These youngsters have progressed steadily, side by side, in the last two or three seasons, but usually Pattinson has had the better of their occasional matches. On Saturday Penfold revealed unexpected defensive powers. He skilfully used the lob to get out of many awkward positions and to counter Pattinson's brilliant driving. Penfold also volleyed neatly and decisively when he had made an opening. Juniors of Promise The match between the Misses I. and T Poole for first position on the women's list did not eventuate, but there were some good struggles for the lower positions. Miss D. Dickey was a little too erratic to get full value for her shots against Miss I. Morrison in a match marked by excellent d-iving rallies and fell from fourth to fifth position. Miss J. Senior displaced Miss E. Fleetwood from sixth position after a long match. A very interesting game was that between Mis* K. Armstrong and Miss S. Anderson. The former is the provincial junior champion and her splendid stroke equipment—much of it the result of painstaking coaching by Mr F J. Murray—should take her far in the game. Miss Anderson is also a young player of promise, hut at present she is woefully weak on the backhand. No doubles ranking list has yet been chosen, but the players will probably be ranked on the results of the games played in the next few weeks. The next of ranking matches will be nlaved on Thursday. Results were as follows: MEN'S SINGLES C. Angas beat H. A. Barnctt (challenger) for first place. 6-1, 6-1. I. J. Corich (challenger! beat H. Dymond for third nlace. 1-6, 6-0, 6-0. A. R. Cant beat B. N.S.W. CHAMPIONSHIP

CONTESTS

BROMWICH BEATS QUIST

IN SINGLES

(Received November 14, 8 p.m.)

SYDNEY, November 14. In the state tennis championships, Bromwich, by beating Quist by three sets to two won the men's singles championship, 4-6 6-4, 6-1, 2-6, 7-5. The women s singles championship was won by Miss N. Wynne, a Victorian, who defeated Miss T. Boyne, 6-3, 7-5. The singles match was more notable for its changing fortunes than to any consistent excellence. Actually there was little between Quist and Bromwich. and probably two "net cords," in the fifth set, turned the tide in Bromwich's favour when he seemed likely to be beaten. In the final of the men's doubles championship, Crawford and McGrath beat Bromwich and A. Huxley, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4. 'ln the women's doubles, Mrs Hopman and Miss Coyne beat Misses N. Wynne and D. Stevenson, 10-8,. 3-6, 6-3.
