NEW BRIGHTON SURF CLUB
OPENING OF SEASON
The New Brighton Surf Bathing and Life-Saving Club was officially opened for the 1937-38 season yesterday afternoon by the patron, Mr A. W. Owles. The Mayor and Mayoress, Mr and Mrs E. L. Smith, who were accompanied by Miss Joan Smith, were among those present. The president, Mr L. C. Matson, welcomed those present, and read a telegram from the Hon. D. G. Sullivan, apologising for his absence. Mr Matson said that Mr Sullivan had attended every previous opening for the last 25 years. The Mayor said that the Borough Council always appreciated the work done by the surf clubs, and he was pleased to see that there was every possibility that the Government would do more for them in the future. Following the opening, a team comprising M. O'Connor (patient), M. Butterick (belt). A. T. F. Stokes, R. Herrick and H. Horsfall (line) and L. I. Carson (reel), with A. B. Bacon as instructor, gave a very clean exhibition in a fairly rough sea, with a strong southerly set.
