HOLIDAY FOR SHOW
MANY KAIL PASSENGERS
TRAVEL
ABOUT l-'IVE HUNDRED LEAVE
ASHBURTON
The streets of Ashburton were deserted yesterdav, on the occasion of the annual holiday for the Metropolitan Show in Christchurch. All shops were closed and only a few businesses remained at work. The show was, as is usual, a big attraction for Ashburton. and hundreds left to attend it and the trotting meeting by rail and by car. The figures show that slightly fewer travelled by rail this year than last year, nearly 500 persons making the trip. By the ordinary train at 8.15 no fewer than 350 persons travelled. A special train from Ashburton shortly afterwards carried 100 persons, and the special train from Timaru, which was full, was joined by about 40 local travellers. A total of 512 persons made the journey by rail on Show Day last year. The weather in Ashburton for the holiday was pleasantly warm. There were no major attractions locally, but many of those who remained in town spent the day on sports greens. A progressive pairs tournament conducted by the Ashburton Bowling Club attracted good entries. A croquet tournament v/as held on the Allenton lawn and a yankee tournament on the Allenton Tennis Club's courts. Most of the swimming baths in town are now open, and these were visited by many persons yesterday. The Ashburton riverbed, which is becoming increasingly popular, attracted a large number of bathers, and many picnic rjarties. A large number of motorists sought the fords at the upper reaches of the river. Because of the holiday shops were ODen for the late shopping night on Thursday.
