Miss Mary Mackenzie ("Otumarama”) is visiting her sister, Mrs Downes Roberts, Middlemarch. Miss Veda Townsend, who was the guest of Mrs W. Townsend, Hassall street, has returned to Dunedin. Mrs Inglis (Auckland) is staying with Mrs Hawkes, Douglas street. Mrs K Vincent and Miss Sheila Vincent (Kingsdown) have returned from a trip to England. Mr and Mrs C. M. Hendry (Rugby street) are visiting Mr and Mrs A. Joines, Lyalldale. Miss G. Sullivan (Albury), who was the guest of Mrs A. Joines, Lyalldale, has returned home. Miss Cicely Holmes (Mount Harding, Methven) arrived yesterday to stay with Mrs H. Bannerman, Sarah Reunion Dinner Members of the Timaru High School Old Girls’ Association held their annual reunion dinner in the Bay tearooms. Arrangements for the gathering had been made by the president of the Old Girls’ Association, Miss Isa Young, and the following members of the committee: Misses Margaret Martin. Mavis Bowen, Violet Chamberlain, Muriel Young, Janet Miller, Irene Leggott. Hazel Healey, Eulla McCubbin, Joan Higginson, and Ngaira Hogg. The guests of honour were Miss J. R. Barr, principal of the Girls’ High School. Miss Veda Townsend (president of the Dunedin branch of the Old Girls’ Association), Mrs M. Morrow (Christchurch), Mrs D. Wooding and Mrs M. Marshall, and Miss A. Aitken, former members of the staff, Miss E. A. King and Miss P. J. Jones. During the evening an opportunity was taken by the old girls of showing their love and appreciation of the two members of the staff, Miss E. A. King and Miss P. J. Jones, who will retire at the end of the present year. A wireless set was presented to Miss King and a handbag to Miss Jones.
NATIONAL COUNCIL OF WOMEN
CHRISTCHURCH BRANCH
At the monthly meeting of the Christchurch branch of the National Council of Women, Mrs W. Mackay was elected secretary, and Mrs T. Tomlinson and Mrs J. Lorimer vice-presi-dents. A Dominion committee was set up, comprising Miss Havelaar, Mesdames Mackay, Roberts. Tomlinson. Lorimer, and Miss Chaplin. The meeting agreed to support a remit from Wanganui urging the Government to inquire into the question of drinking in motor-cars outside dance halls. Appreciation was expressed of the City Council’s action in preparing plans for houses for old age pensioners and indigent persons. A resolution to be sent to the Canterbury members of Parliament was passed, requesting their support in opposing the transfer of the hotel licence at the Bealey to Arthur’s Pass, in view of the fact that the great majority of the residents are opposed to such transfer. Miss C. Henderson gave an informative talk on the economic position of married women during the last century, and traced the changes and improvements that had been made during the years. It was agreed to inquire further into what has been done in other countries, more particularly in Norway, Finland, and Canada, in regard to the economic position of married women.
ENGAGEMENT NOTICE
The engagement is announced of Nurse M. Rehu, eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs K. Rehu, Temuka, to Phillip James Carroll, only son of Mr and Mrs F. Carroll, Christchurch.
