GERMAN CHURCH PROTEST
UNITED DECLARATION OF FAITH HERR HITLER ASKED TO DEFINE ATTITUDE STRONG CAMPAIGN ANNOUNCED FROM PULPIT (a SITED I’KESS ASSOCIATION —COPVRIOBT.) (Received November 8, 10 p.m.) LONDON, November 7. The Berlin correspondent of “The Times” says the Protestant leaders have dispatched to Herr Hitler the strongest and most united declaration of faith made for many months. It repudiates Nazi attacks on Christianity and directly questions all members of the Government and heads of departments as follows: “Are you for us or against us? It asks Herr Hitler to issue an authoritative statement to re-establish confidence in his promises of freedom of worship. Meanwhile the number of arrested pastors exceeds 100. A message from Munich says that Cardinal Faulhaber made a power-, ful appeal to a congregation of many thousands to remain loyal to the church in spite of persecution, hunger, or even the sword. He announced a vigorous campaign from the pulpit as a reply to the antichurch drive which is expected before 1938, when many trials of priests and members of religious orders will be held.
