FESTIVITY WEEK IN

RANGIORA

PRELIMINARY ARRANGEMENTS MADE

To arrange for the annual festivity week in Rangiora from December 17 to December 24, the following committee was elected at a public rneeting, over which the Mayor (Mr C. W. Tyler) presided, last evening:—Messrs Tyler, J. O. Webber, C. and A. Haigh, W P N. Keir, F. T. Ager, D. Appleby, F.’A.'Lane, C. J. Smith, W. Smith, W Henderson, H. H. Matthews, J. M. Fraser, and C. E. Dawson. A variety of events was suggested for the week, and they will be considered by the committee. It was decided to ask businessmen to contribute to the funds as in previous years. . .... A report from last year’s committee showed a credit balance of £l2. Solomon Island Experiences Her experiences as a missionary in the Solomon Islands were described by Sister Elizabeth Common, in an address at a special meeting of the Rangiora branch of the Methodist Women s Missionary Union yesterday afternoon. The president (Mrs W. T. Dennis) presided. and visitors were present from the Woodend and Waikuku branches. Items were given by Mesdames l». ri. Ellis and E. C. Horsley, and Misses J. and U. Dennis.

CLUB REVIVED AT CHEVIOT OFFICERS ELECTED FOR YEAR A meeting to revive local interest in cricket at Cheviot was held recently. Mr F. W. Gurnsey presided. A club was formed several years ago, but has been inactive for some years. The election of officers resulted as follows: President. Dr. L. H. Marshall; vicepresidents, Messrs C. England. R. G. Archer, and C. Whitehead; committee, Messrs R. Powell. C. Whitehead, R. G. Archer, and D. G. McDonald; secretary, Mr W. Drew.

LITTLE RIVER BEATS W AINU I

Little River A played Wainui in . Banks Peninsula Sub-Association s cricket competitions on Saturday at Lithe RiverLittle River won by 110 runs on the first innings. The highest scorers for LU k River were R. Starky 30. Jock Coop 34. Toby Robinson 36, D. Le Compte 23. I. MeGowan 13. W. Hutchinson 11, I. McDonald 28, L. Hooker 9, R. Mould 8.

MATCHES AT PREBBLETON

The Prebbleton cricket team recently played two friendly games with visiting players. The first of these, against the Adiiington R.L.C.. was won by the visitors with a margin of 33 runs. The total for Addington was 156 runs, the top scorers being Fraser 48 retired. Harfsen 35. and Ward 11. Prebbleton replied with 121 (R. Cherry 39. Skinner 29, Giles 14 not out, T. Prebble 13). . .. A decisive win was scored against the Para Rubber Company’s team, when Prebbleton compiled 274 runs, made principally by T. Prebble with 95, Skinner 72, and Ayers 14. The visitors’ Innings produced 87 runs (Besman 24, Lloyd 18).

HORRELVILLE METHODIST CIRCUIT

QUARTERLY MEETING HELD

The quarterly meeting of the Ohoka Methodist Circuit was held at the home of Mr F. A. Sheat, Horrelville. The Rev. H. Benny presided. A motion of sympathy was passed with Mrs Mayer in the loss of her mother. Four new members were proposed. A report on the recent flower show was presented, and a vote of thanks was passed to all who assisted to make it such a success. Reports were presented as follows:—Horrelville Sunday School by Mr J. E. Horrell: Ohoka and Eyreton Sunday schools, Mr W. Ashe; Horrelville Bible Class, Mr D. Blackmore; Ohoka Bible class, the Rev. Mr Benny: foreign mission, Mr J. Horrell. Mr Cotton congratulated the circuit on the high standard of the youth work. Messrs Ashe and Sheat were aopointed as circuit representatives at the North Canterbury Synod. A unanimous invitation was extended to Mr Benny to continue his work in the circuit for another year The next meeting will be held at Eyreton in January.

WEST EYRETON SCHOOL COMMITTEE

A meeting of the West Eyreton School Committee was held recently in the schoolroom. Those present were Messrs R- W. Thompson (chairman). W S Busch, J. McLauchlan, L. Hide, J. 'Lucas, and A. R. Chambers (headmaster). , ~ ~ It was decided to have the paths in the school concreted during the Christmas holidays. It was decided to obtain further advice regarding the insurance of children being carried to inter-school matches, sports and picnics. ■ . ' . . The report of the inspector on his annual visit to the school was received. A letter was received suggesting the inclusion of West Eyreton in the school to be served by the proposed subclinic at Oxford. No decision was made although it was mentioned that Oxford was not the natural centre for West Eyreton residents.

DANCE RECITAL AT DARFIELD

There was a good attendance at a recital by the pupils of Miss Matthews at Darfield. Items were given by Maureen Robb, June Loe,“ Peggy Dixon ‘.Kaiapoi), Nita Robb, Corrie Berg, Ailsa Stott, Mera Warren, Noreen Mulholland, Ngaire Warren, Dorothy Matthews (Kaiapoi), F. Dixon (Kaiapoi), Elaine Grey (Kaiapoi), and May. Sanson. Miss Matthews gave the proceeds to the'library fund.

A friendly tennis match was played on the Culverden courts on Sunday afternoon between a team brought from Christchurch by Mr F. Wilson and a Culverden team. The visitors were successful in winning by 11 sets fBo games) to Culverden’s one set (37 games).

The weather observations recorded by Mr A. W. Adams, “Pukeura,” Sheffield. for October show that generally the weather was warm and dry. Several heavy frosts were recorded, the most severe being on October 16. The rainfall for October was 86 points, which fell on eight days, against 2.75 inches, which fell on 10 days, for the some month last year. There were no heavy falls during the month, the heaviest fall being on October 26. when 18 points were recorded. The average rainfall for October over a period of 15 years was 3.47 inches. The total rainfall for 1937 to date was 27.49 inches, compared with 37.52 inches for the same period last year.

FRIENDLY MATCH

AKAROA B V. LITTLE RIVER B A friendly cricket match between the Akaroa and Little River B teams was played on the Recreation Ground, Akaroa, on Saturday. The game resulted in a win for Akaroa by 239 runs to 98. For Akaroa, J. V. Masefield 84, T. Masefield 73 (retired), T. Vaatau 23. O. G. Eves 16, and V. Armstrong 11 were the highest scorers. For Little River, B. J. McGowan made 34, R. Harrison 21, L. Giddens 13, and R. Ussher 11. The best bowlers were: For Akaroa, W. E. M. Jacobson, two for 8; J. Masefield, one for 4; R. Curry, two for 11: and R. Masefield, one for 8. For Little River B, R. Harrison, four for 37; C. Barclay, two for 32.
