ROYAL CHIEF’S FINE WIN

Derby Day at Riccarton

Canterbury Jockey Club’s Meeting

The Fendalton Handicap gave Friesland, owned and trained at Hawera, a well-deserved win. He was slow to move off, but making a fast run rounding the home turn, he was well placed in the early part of the straight, and completed his task solidly to beat Davolo, who ran another sound race. There was a surprise for investors in the decision of the Criterion Handicap, the little-fancied Pelmet leading practically all the way from another Wild Career. The Awapuni colt, Surmount, was considered unbeatable in the Irwell Handicap, but the Riccarton colt. Defaulter, outstayed him and won impressively. ’Trench Fight returned to winning form in the Epsom Handicap, and gave Sir Charles Clifford his first success since the Dunedin meeting early last month. • •. , ... The programme was got through with every* dispatch, and the time-table was strictly adhered to. The racing was most interesting throughout, and the several close finishes reflected credit on the club’s handicapper, Mr W. P. Russell, and on the starter, Mr P. D. Mac Nab, whose dispatches were consistently good. The Governor-General, Lord Galway, and Lady Galway were interested spectators for more than half of the programme, and. Royal Chief, winner of the Derby, was decorated by Lady Galway with the blue ribbon. FRIESLAND AND TRENCH FIGHT SUCCESSFUL

The Canterbury Jockey Club was again favoured with fine weather for Derby Day at Riccarton yesterday, the second day of its metropolitan meeting. There was a large attendance. The track was again fast, and was in good order after a liberal watering over the week-end.

Investors fared better than on Saturday, and speculation was well maintained throughout the day, the sum of £37,410 (win £ 17,929 10s, place £19,480 10s) being handled, against £30,548 10s (win. £16,543, place £14,005 10s) on Derby Day last year, an . increase of £6861 10s, The total for the two completed days is £102,995 10s, compared with £80,185 10s for rthe corresponding days last year, an increase of £22,810.

The Derby field was reduced to four contestants by late withdrawals, and the pool was much smaller than last year, Royal Chief cramping the speculation. The Crooner caused mild excitement by soon opening up a big break on Royal Chief, and when lie was still in front turning for home and appeared to have something in reserve, another defeat of a staunch Derby favourite seemed imminent; but Royal Chief was equal to the severe task set him over the final stages, and won in most hfipressive style. He again easily beat Smoke Screen, who gathered in The Crooner in the last few strides. The time was not fast, Royal Chief running his last mile in Imin 44 2-ssec and the last half mile in 50scc. Royal Chief has won £2705 this season, making his total winnings to date £4295.

NOTES ON THE RACING

Favourite Wins First Event Investors jpegan well by sending out Sunny Blonde favourite for the Middleton Handicap, high-weight conditions, as she went to the front a few strides after the start, and was never troubled. She led round the top and into the straight from Private Bunsby. Last Link,. Superex, The Surgeon, and Lustral. The Surgeon and Superex threw out challenges inside the distance, but neither could make any impression on the leader, who had close on two lengths to spare at the post from The Surgeon, who outstayed Super Ox. Lady Siegfried length away, a neck in front of Convivial,

with Heloise and Last Link closely following. Sunny Blonde’s form at Trentham made her first choice, and the issue was never in doubt. The Surgeon gave trouble at the start, and was the last to move off, but in any case he would not have beaten the winner. Superex looked likely turning for home, but was stopping at the finish. The same applied to Lady Siegfried, who was well enough placed at the home turn to win if she had been good enough. Heloise was never likely. The hurdle race evidently took a lot out of Last Link. Surmount Beaten The glorious uncertainty of racing was once more revealed by the defeat of Surmount in the Irwell Handicap. He was sent out the shortest-priced favourite of the meeting to date, and when he entered the course proper, just in front of Ortyx, his success seemed assured. He was a neck in front of Ortyx at the distance, with Defaulter putting in a claim. Ortyx was the first to weaken, and Defaulter then tackled Surmount. In a hard struggle, Defaulter wore down Surmount, to beat him comfortably, with Ortyx a fair third, a head in front of On Call. Eastern Hero was next, with a big gap to the remainder, headed by Romarin. Defaulter gave an attractive display of speed and stamina, and raced up to the high opinions formed of him in his track trials. He was unlucky not to get the benefit of a race at Motukarara—he fell at the start of his race —and his effort in the Welcome Stakes evidently had the desired effect. Surmount reproduced his previous brilliance, but, as at Trentham. he failed to see the ordeal through. Ortyx was again prominent throughout, and there is no doubt she has a solid constitution. Both On Call and Great Baby were prominent turning for home, and the former carried on for a good race; but Great Baby, who was off the active list for a while, drifted to last place. Godfrey was always well back. A Close Finish The Strowan Plate resulted in a close finish between two West Coastowned horses, Rabble and Glenog 1. Screamer, a stable-mate of the former, filled third place. Mulatto and Screamer raced abreast in front on to the course proper, with Kindly, Glsnogil, Pol Roger, Sunbeam, and Rabble all handy. Glenogil showed out 100 yards from the post, and was immediately challenged by Rabble, and the pair engaged in a neck and neck fight to the post, Rabble getting a narrow verdict. Screamer hung on for third money, half a length in front of Mulatto, with Pol Roger a length away. Then came Love Affair, Mob Rule, and Ardmayle. Rabble has always shown promise, and has raced very consistently without previously breaking his maiden status. He was not well placed during the middle stages, and stumbled badly half-way down the stra'ght, so his performance was full of merit. Glenogil, a half-sister to Red Heckle, carried on the good work she has displayed on the tracks, and is likely to develop into a high-class performer. Screamer gave trouble at the start, but was one of the first to show out; and, kept up to his work by his vigorous' rider, completed his task more solidly than in recent previous races. Mulatto tnade a bold showing for the greater part of the journey, and will be an interesting Oaks candidate. Pol Roger was alwavs in a handy position on the fence. Kindly looked likely half-way down the running, but failed to go on. Her highly-strung behaviour before the race had something to do with this. Sunbeam was not far from the leaders at the distance, but, when attempting a run through, met trouble and narrowly missed falling. Haerepo stumbled badly when the barrier lifted, and trailed the field. Royal Chief’s Derby There were only four starters in the New Zealand Derby, but much interest was shown in the contest, mainly because of the third clash between Royal Chief and Smoke Screen, while The Crooner also attracted attention after his good race in the Trentham Stakes last month. The four got away on even terms, but omoKe Screen was steadied in behind, his rider not wanting to take rum to the front, and it was left to The Crooner to set the pace. He Quickly took command, and going info foe back stretch was four lengths m front of Royal Chief, with two lengths to Lazybones and Smoke Screen together. There was no change either in order or distances until the half-mile was reached, when Royal Chief began Ins severe task of bridging the gap to The Crooner, who was still going freely about three lengths in front of Royal at the home turn, with two lengths still to Smoke Screen, Lazybones weakening at this stage. The pace was clapped on seriously as soon as heads were turned for home, and it was then realised that the ordeal was tilling on the pacemaker. Royal Chief gradually drew up to him, and was almost on even terms at the distance. ' Smoke Screen also improved his position at this stage, but although U could be seen that he would overhaul The Qrooner, he was held safe by Royal Chief, who, without being ridden at all vigorously, had a comfortable win. \ Smoke Screen finished strongly, an|3 got to within half a length of Rdjyal Chief, but there was more in it than that margin. The Crooner was another half-length away, with Lazybones 'several lengths in the rear. i -. , Royal Chief received a great ovation on .returning. He appeared to have a most difficult task in front of him

with three furlongs to go, but his rider did not shown any uneasiness, and his patient handling of his mount added to the spectacular final stages of the classic. Smoke Screen, a doubtful stayer, no doubt suffered by the tactics adopted by The Crooner’s rider, and although he was able to outstay the Okawa colt, he did not show any signs of getting to Royal Chief, who thus is definitely the superior of the two colts. There is no doubt ythat only ill-luck prevented him from beating Smoke Screen at Ellerslie. A Surprise The day’s surprise was provided by the Criterion Handicap, for which Alma was sent out a good favourite. She was in a prominent position at the distance, but failed under her big weight. Gaysome. Triune, Wino, who were all troublesome at the post, were the last to move off, and when the field had covered a furlong, Pelmet showed out from Paper Slipper, Alma, Grey Honour, Black Thread, and Wild Career. Pelmet was still in charge turning for home from Alma, Paper Slipper, Wino, Wild Career, Triune, and Black Thread, and although Wild Career and Triune tried to get up to the leader, they could not reduce the gap, and Pelmet had a decisive win. Paper Slipper was a length away, another length in front of Wino, who headed a bunch including Alma, Concertpitch, Rebel Chief, and Grey Honour;

This was Pelmet’s first win since her two-year-old season, when her victories included the McLean Stakes and Wellesley Stakes. Wild Career did his best work over the final stages, and Triune had a lot of ground to make up to share in the money. Paper Slipper went down scratchily, and failed to see the journey out. Wino showed slight improvement after a slow beginning. Rebel Chief ran poorly after his encouraging finishing run in the Stewards’ Handicap.

A Creditable Performance Friesland justified his favouritism for the Fendalton Handicap by an impressive win after being slow to move off. Enge soon took up the running, and with half, the journey covered, was three lengths in front of Linguist, Davolo, Queen Dorothy, and Boomerang, with Friesland and Last Refrain bringing up the rear. Enge was displaced by Davolo at the turn into the straight, and the latter led Lady Graceful, Queen Dorothy, Rebel Lad, and Friesland past the distance post. Friesland then put in a determined claim, and gradually wearing down Davolo, was going away from him at the post. Last Refrain, last at the half-mile, put in some telling work in the straight to secure third money a length in front of Lady Graceful, who beat Pukeko by a head. Friesland’s was a sterling performance, as he was well back half-a-mile from home, but when similarly situated in many races in the North Island, he wore down the leaders m like manner. Davolo presented a solid defence, but was unable to hold off the winner’s final spurt. Last Refrain's effort was almost on a par with that of Friesland, as he was squeezed back when the field moved off, and when trying to make a forward move rounding the far turn, he was disappointed and sent back again, to be the last to enter the straight. Lady Graceful ran a most cred table race, and will soon get back to winning form. Queen. Dorothy did not complete her work as satisfactorily as formerly, and Enge stopped abruptly as soon as the run home was begun.

Janet Gaynor Again Alunga, Lickem, and Sir Hugh were the best supported in the Randolph Handicap: but Janet Gaynor again led the field throughout and paid another big price, about half of her first day’s dividend. Janet Gaynor was followed round the top by Paper Note. Alunga, Lady Montana, Lickem, and Sir Hugh. Janet Gaynor was well clear of Sigurd entering the straight, with Alunga, Paper Note, Lady Montana, Sir Hugh and Lickem following. Lady Montana challenged inside the distance and looked likely to overhaul the leader, but Janet Gaynor drew away again, and won decisively. Thermidor made a belated appearance to get up for third money, a length in front of Norseman, with Lickem, Sigurd, Sir Hugh, and Paper Note following in that order. Janet Gaynor won so easily on the first day that her comparative neglect in this race was surprising. Lady Montana ran another sound race, and was unlucky to encounter the speedy winner in both her races. Both Norseman and Thermidor were slow away, and did well to take part in the finish. Alunga had every chance, but was done with earl.- in the run home.

Trench Fight Returns The Bigot carried twice the total entrusted to Trench Fight in the Epsom Handicap, and the pair, had a strenuous tussle over the last furlong. Big Dook was again slow away and Waitaka made a poor beginning. Daring Deed was soon in front, and led round the top from Roaming, The Bigot, Trench Fight, Milford, Araboa, and Fiord, all running in close order. Daring Deed was joined by Roaming turning for home, and (he pair entered the straight abreast clear of The Bigot, Trench Fight, and Milford. The leaders did not last long, and The Bigot, showing out, was quickly challenged by Trench Fight, and the pair settled

down to a hard tussle home, Trench Fight always holding a' slight advantage, and getting a head verdict. Two lengths away Milford beat Roaming by a length, with another length to Big Book, who was followed by Fiord and Daring Deed. Trench Fight scored an impressive win, and as he has not had any racing since the Grand National meeting, he is inclined to make improvement, and be a big stake-earner as the season advances. The Bigot shaped well in his first attempt in open company, and but for moving about at a serious stage of the run home, he may have kept Trench Fight at bay. Milford ran another sound race, as also did Roaming, who should do better before the end of the week. Big Dook lost his chance early, and in any case the track was against him. Araboa was well placed to the home turn, where he went right back.
