CERNE ABBAS WINS CUP

Alma Succeeds in Stewards' Handicap

WELCOME STAKES WON BY PEERLESS

Opening of Canterbury Jockey Club's Meeting

The Canterbury Jockey Club's metropolitan meeting was opened at Riccarton on Saturday in ideal weather. An almost cloudless sky, with only a slight breeze, made the atmosphere uncomfortably warm during the early part of the afternoon; but later a cool easterly wind made matters much more p'earant. The attendance was the largest for many years and included visitors from every part of New Zealand. The GovernorGeneral, Lord Galway, and Lady Galway arrived after the first race and stayed throughout the programme.

The New Zealand Cup attracted much interest, and the apparent evenness of the field was shown by the widely distributed pool, which amounted to £ 12114. An excellent contest was presented, and the victory of Cerne Abbas aroused much enthusiasm, net so much on account of her being favourite, but because of her attractive display of galloping and stamina in the trying task set her over the last furlong. She has been very consistent this season, and the racing she has had served as a valuable preparation for Saturday's big ordeal. Wild Chase made a bold showing, and gave in to Cerne Abbas only a few ' strides from the post. The latter was ridden by L. J. Ellis, who thus narrowly missed winning three Cups in succession. Silver Streak made a creditable effort in his first attempt over an extreme journey, and there is now no doubt about his versatility. Cerne Abbas gave his trainer, F. D. Jones, his first win in , the New Zealand Cup, and gave her sire, Lord Warden, his most Important success, ~

The Stewards' Handicap resulted in a comparatively easy victory for Alma, •who, like Cerne Abbas, claims a Dunedin owner. Alma has been a most consistent sprintsr, and. won four races in eight starts last season, and opened this term well by winning two races at the Grand National meeting, and ■won again at Gore on Labour Day Brunhild ran a good race into second place, and another North Islander Tin Laughing Lass filled third place. Gay Son was considered an outstanding proposition for the Welcome Stakes, but as has been often the case ■with two-year-old classics he met defeat. He began smartly, and entered the straight on level terms with Peerless, but the latter always held him safe, and beat him comfortably. Taurangi was a good third, the places being thus filled by progeny of Beau Per*, whose transfer to Australia must be considered a severe loss to New Zpaland bloodstock. Smoke Screen was accorded an enthusiastic reception after winning the concluding event in a manner which suggested he will again be a formid-. able rival to Rcyal Chief in the Derby He was a little restless at the barrier, and, dwelling when the barrier lifted, he lost valuable ground, and thus set himself a very difficult task. Speculators fared reasonably well, four favourites winning, whfe others filled places. The sum of £65,585 10s (win £28.510, place £37.075 10s) was handled, as against £49,637 (win £21,750 10s, place £27,886 10s) on New Zealand Cup day last year, an increase of £15,948 10s. Details of the racing are as follows:

NOTES ON THE RACING

A Close Tussle Red Sun was sent out a good favourite in a big pool in the Spring Hurdles, but was never likely. Fiord and Last Link disputed the early leadership, but after passing the mile post, Redolent went to the front and led round the top and into the straight, with Last Link, Silver Sight, Fiord, John Charles, Superex, and Red Sun closing up. Redolent weakened going to the last fence, and Silver Sight and Last Link crossed the fence abreast clear of Redolent, John Charles, and Red Sun. The two leaders had a sustained struggle home, and racing neck and neck to the post, Silver Sight secured the verdict by a narrow margin. John Charles was a fair third, two lengths in front of Red Sun, with Redolent. Superex, Fiord, Chaste, Solwit, and Mount Val following in that order. Silver Sight and Last Link gave a spectacular display over the last fence, jumping it abreast, and they carried on for one of the most exciting tussles seen for some time. John Charles ran hL best race for a good while. Red Sun was well back most of the way and looked likely turning for home, but he had too much ground to make up, and in any case weakened over the last stages. Redolent had every chance out in front, but was a beaten horse at the last fence. Fiord madr a bold showing, but a bad jump near the mile post steadied him, and he was done with a good way from home His bracketed mate, Solwit, was one of the leaders for half the journey, but then began to drift In Winning Vein

The Bigot was made first choice for the Spring Plate, and justified his; position by a narrow but impressive win. A good start was made; but Nightdress. Sovereign Lady Rockingham, and Dropped Catch were slow to find their feet. When the field settled down Sigurd and Papei Note showed out from The Bigot and Natty, and these entered the straight in thai order from Top Row. Sovereign Lady. Siegn und. and Nightdress. Sigurd gave way to The Bigot inside the distance, and Siegmund then put in a t-laim on the outside. In another hard finish, the favourite won by half a length, with Siegmund two lengths in front of Top Row. who beat the fast finishing Sovereign Lady by a head.

Sigurd was next in front of Rockingham and Nightdress. The Bigot's record for his last five sti-rts is four wins and a dead-heat and in winning this event in time that is not often equalled at Riccarton he stamped himself as one of the best hack performers in recent years. He went out of hack company by his first win at Trentham, but has been able to carry out his hack nominations. Siegmund put up a stubborn fight, and will improve. Top Row did his best work in the straight, while Sovereign Lady's placing a', the finish was very creditable in the face of her unfavourable position for most of the journey. Nightdress drew No 1 and, missing the iump-out. was never in a likely position Rockingham was again unlucky. Paper Note did well while she lasted, while Sigurd was prominent to within a furlong from home.

All the Wav Janet Gaynor was the first to show out in thp Linwood Handicap, and was not overhauled. She was followed into the straight by Lbrd Nuffield, Lady Montana. Fog Peak, and Nolana and Lady Montana drew up to her inside the distance. .Another hard finish ensued, the outsider staying on to gain a neck verdict. Lord Nuffield was a good third, a head in front of Fog Peak, with another head margin to Norseman. Maroha and Moonraker headed the remainder. This was Janet Gaynor's second success, her previous being in a maiden event at Kurow, where she led from end to end. Lady Montana made a game effort, but although considerably reducing the gap, could not get up to the leader Lord Nuffield was always prominent, but failed to stay on. Fog Peak held on better than previously, while Norseman did well to become orominent at the finish, as he was one of the slowest to move off. Screamer and Dollar Prince were also slow awav.

The Favourite's Cup In spite of her failure at the Banks Peninsula Racing Club's meeting, Cerne Abbas was installed favourite for the New Zealand Cup. for which all the acceptors except Hunting Cat went to the post. The field got away on level terms, and was well bunched for the first half-mile, with Linguist. Wild Chase, Rebel Lad, Tauramai. Boomerang, Argentic, Silver Streak, and Hazocr all prominent, and Lowenberg and Sunee in last place. Boomerang ran to the front at the sevenfurlong post, and a little further on Tauramai joined him, and the pair entered the straight in front of Trebleack, who made a fast forward move rounding the top, Cottingham, Wild Cl-ase, Cerne Abbas, Silver Streak, and Friesland. Wild Chase moved up on the rails as soon as the run home was begun, and was in front passing the distance, with Cerne Abbas improving her position in the middle of the course. The finish was actually left to this pair. *Vild Chase was half a length in front 50 yards from the post, but Cerne Abbas crept up inch by inch, and getting her head in front a few strides from the line, won a great race by half a length. Si.ver Streak gradually improved his position from the distance and got up to beat Friesland for third money by a length. Queen of Song. Linguist, Trebleack, Argentic, Sunee, and Cottingham followed in that order. Might fell passing the distance and Small Boy fell over him, both being well back at the time. Cerne Abbas did some telling work over the last two furlongs, and although she did not head off Wild Chase until nearing the post, she actually had his measure earlier. Wild Chase started from an outside position, but was quickly in a good berth, and was never further back than third or fourth. His price for a place was surprising. Silver Streak ran a sterling race, and had no trouble in seeing out the journey. Friesland went a sound race in spite of going down very scratchily. Tauramai pulled up lame.

Peerless Beats Gay Son The Welcome Stakes was responsible for the defeat of a very short-priced favourite in Gay Son by the Trenthamtrained Peerless. Both were always prominent, and entered upon the course proper practically on terms with Taurangi, Ortyx, and Defaulter. Peerless and Gay Son drew out inside the distance, and another sustained finish resulted in Peerless winning by three-quarters of a length. Taurangi was two "lengths away, a similar distance in front of Eastern Heir, with Defaulter and Ortyx next. The three placed horses were ail sired by Beau Pere, who is having a remarkable first season at the stud. Peerless was bought at Trentham by her present owner for 425 guineas, and has had two second placings and a win in four starts. Gay Son had every chance and was beaten on his merits. Taurangi made a creditable showing, and Defaulter would have done better but for boring in under pressure in the straigfit. Ortyx began smartly, but was one of the first beaten in the straight. Compensate jumped out badly and was always in a rear position.

Apprentices in Control Parquet carried most money in the Aporentices' Handicap, and made a bold effort to win. but was well beaten by Happy Night. When the field had settled down, Lady Middleham showed out from Drinkup. Shirred Ribbon, and Happy Night. Shirred Ribbon shot to the front rounding the top turn, and had a clear advantage from Owlsgleam and Happy Night entering the straight, with Parquet and Windward next. The run home had not long been entered upon before Happy Night asserted himself, and gradually overhauling the leader, carried on for a decisive win, while Parquet finished solidly to beat Shirred Ribbon for second place. Lickem came from well back to be next, in front of Owlsgleam. Drinkup. and Windward. Happy Night outclassed the field when he put in his claim, and was rid-

den a fine race. This was only his second success, but he has the ability to earn further distinction in better company than he has so far encountered. Parquet shaped well, while Snirrea Ribbon surprised North Islanders by her forward showing. The disappointments were Drinkup, Ardchoille. and Lickem.

Alma's Impressive Win The Stewards' Handicap provided an interesting contest throughout the run home. Alma was the first to show out. but was soon displaced by Gold Boa, who led on to the course proper from Alma, Laughing Lass. Ben Braggie, and Brunhild. Gold Boa weakened before the distance, and Alma then had charge from. Laughing f r un hild, Ben Braßgie. and. Paper Slipper, with Rebel Chief moving up on the outside Brunhild threw out a determined challenge but had no chance of getting up to Alma, who won wren fftmethina in hand. Laughing Lass w£ a cSfse third, two lengths in .front of Rebel Chief, with Paper Slipper and Ben Braggie together next and Gold Boa in last place.. Alma had the race intend a furlong from home. Brunhild put up a eood fight after having given a lot of trouble at toe start, and being sent awav from the extreme outsme. f auehine Lass was always in the picture but her bracketed mate Oratory narrowly missed falling wher .leaving the barrier and lost any. chance she oossessed. Both Bed Braggie and Simper had every ooportumty. but failed to run on. Rebel Chief executed his best work in the straight, and will do better later at the meeting Gold Boa showed her usual speed, but stopped very quickly early in the straight.

Derby Candidate Succeeds Smoke Screen was responsible tor an excellent Derby trial in winning the Riccarton Handicap under his solid weight of 9-2. He was slow to move off. and had only one horse P a ?°}° behind him over the first half furlong but he then made a fast run on tne outsid- and was not far from the leaders. Petersham and Daring Deed, roundin" the far turn. Petersham and Daring Deed were still in charge passing the half-mile from Milford. Smoke Screen. Lazybones and Big. Dook. and *h-v entered the straight in front ot Smoke Screen Milford. Lazybones, and Pukeko. The two leaders were done with at the distance and Smoke Screen craduallv worked his way to the from. Last Refrain and then Pukeko challenged, but they could not improve their positions to anv extent and trier Davolo shot through on the fence Smoke Screen, under pressure hung on to win comfortablv from Davolo. who easilv beat Last Refrain Pukeko was half a length away in front.or Daring Deed. Mynam, Petersham, and Milford. with Big Dook in last nlace. ... Smoke Screen won like the solid eeldine he is. and as the race would do him mo-e poor? than harm, he will keen Royal Chief very busy to-day Davolo's was an excellent pfrort after his poor beginni-fT. Last Refrain was one of the rear division until well into the straight and did well to b° in the monev. Pukeko looked hkflv when hf> loomed up inside the distance, but finished waklv. T h l° ¥,Z" were soread out at th<* oost. th"* biggest d'saopointment being Big Dook who had enough at the end of a- mile
