RETURNED SOLDIERS' DAY GOVERNOR-GENERAL PLAYS AT AVONDALE Such was the success of the first golf day of the Christchurch Returned Soldiers' Association held yesterday on the Avondale links, that it will become an annual event. Thanks are due to Messrs H. R. Blair and C. W. Oborn for the efficient running of the competitions. One hundred and fiity players were sent off the tee well under the scheduled time. His Excllencv the Governor-General olaved on the links in the morning. The cup lor the championship, presented by the Christchurch Press Companv, was won by C. C. Clements, 71, with J B. CHRISTCHURCH CLUB'S CHAMPIONSHIP

P. R. Godby beat M. W. Simes in the final of the Christchurch Golf Club's championship at Shirley yesterday. Eighteen holes were played in the morning and 18 in the afternoon.

Godby lost the second and third holes, recovering on the fifth and sixth. They were all square at the sixteenth. Then Godby won the seventeenth. Simes was out in 37 and completed the round in 76. In the afternoon Godby won the second, third, and fourth, and was out in a perfect 35, to stand 4 up. He won the eleventh (5 up and 7), but lost the thirteenth and, following the next two holes, won 4 up and 3. HAGLEY CLUB The first summer season to be held by the Hagley Golf Club was opened in ideal conditions on Saturday. A stroke handicap was played, best cards being:—W. Mackenzie. 82, 21—61; S.
