SHED DESTROYED BY FIRE
A small shed, only a few feet square, owned by the Railway Department and situated ot No. 5 breastwork, was destroyed by fire on Saturday night. The shed was used to store straw. yachting
The annual sailing race for the Foster Cup, held by the Canterbury Yacht and Motor-Boat Club at Lyttelton on Saturday afternoon attracted 25 entries from all classes. It was sailed in a strong north-east breeze, and two of the competitors, the M class 18-footer, Malay, and the I class sailing boat, Taihoa, capsized. The result, with corrected times, was as follows: — Omana (T. Alexander), 32min, lhr 27min 21sec .. • • • • 1 Manihi (G. Brasell), 7min, lhr 29min 26sec .. .. • • 2 Hakari (I. Newton), 16min, lhr 31min 2sec .. .. .. 3 Minister Inspects Schools Opportunity was taken by the Minister for Education (the Hon. P. Fraser) when passing through Lyttelton during the week-end, to inspect the two Lyttelton schools. The Minister, who was accompanied by Mr T. H. McCombs, M.P., was met' by Mr G. M. Daniel, chairman of the committee of the Lyttelton District High School, and Mr A. T. E. Miller, deputy-chairman, and Mr C. Jackways, of the committee.of the West Lyttelton School. The inspection was made in response to proposals which have been made for the remodelling or rebuilding of the two schools.
