"CANNOT PLAY ABOUT WITH TARIFFS” MINISTER’S REFERENCE TO BOOT TRADE “We can’t play about lightly with tariffs,” said the Hon. H. T. Armstrong, Minister for Labour, commenting yesterday on the difficulties of the footwear trade. “It’s all very well for people to talk of higher tariffs, but we’ve got to consider our agreements with other parts of the Empire. If we break those agreements where do we stand with them?” , The Minister said that since his recent visit to Christchurch and inspection of the footwear factories a deputation from the manufacturers had met the Hon. W. Nash, Minister for Finance. He could say now that the Government would definitely do something for the industry, but it could be done without the necessity of resorting to tariff increases. ,
