METROPOLITAN SHOW

SLIGHT REDUCTION IN ENTRIES

INCREASED SHEEP NUMBERS

Entries for the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s annual show next Thursday and Friday show a decline on those of last year, but the 1936 show was a Royal. Compared with 1935 the entries are a degree less, if allowance is made for the entries in the rabbit section, which has been omitted this year. The detailed figures show a big increase in the number of sheep entered, the comparative figures on 1935 being 993 as against 881. Fewer cattle, horses, and pigs more than offset this increase, but there are more entries in the poultry and dog trials sections. Detailed entries are as follows: Sheep 1937. 1935. WHY WOOL PRICES ROSE

INTENSIFIED DEMAND

The increase in wool prices last year is attributed by the Imperial Economic Committee in “Wool Production and Trade” to a movement in sympathy with commodity prices and intensified demand by consuming countries. The advance was the more remarkable in view of the improved supply position. Germany was hampered by the competition of Japan in South Africa and South America, and took slightly increased amounts from Australia. Belgium and Italy also increased, their purchases in that country. ) In Australia stocks at June 30 aggregated 14.000,0001 b, as compared with 23,000,0001 b a year earlier. During the same period New Zealand stocks fell from 17,000,0001 b to 11.000.0001 b, the greater part of which was disposed of m July and August.
