UNEMPLOYMENT AT RANGIORA

ALLOCATION FOR NEXT WEEK The unemployment allocation for the Rangiora district for next week is the same as that for last week. Twenty-seven men will be .employed under the No. 5 scheme, and 85 will receive sustenance payments. Three men have registered as unemployed at the Government Employment Bureau this week, the same as last week’s total. Under the placement scheme the bureau has found temporary work for one man since Monday.

TWO MEN CONVICTED OF THEFT

Before Messrs Jas, Boyd and R. T. Pope, Justices of the Peace, Keith Rayner, a fisherman, of South Bay, Kaikoura, and Clarence Henry Keith Rayner, aged 23, a labourer, of Blenheim, were charged that on or about the first day of October, 1937, at Blenheim, they stole a motor-car engine valued at £5, the property of the State Advances Corporation. Both accused pleaded guilty and were fined £5, in default one month’s imprisonment, with hard labour.

CULYERDEN SCHOOL COMMITTEE

FAINTING OF BUILDING

A full meeting of the Culverden School Committee, which' was held recently, was presided over by Mr J. W. Black. It was decided to thank Messrs P. Rivers and S. Pester for carrying out improvements to the school grounds. It was decided to make application to the Canterbury Education Board to have the interior of the school painted and to obtain an opinion on the committee’s responsibility in the event of an accident in the school baths. It was decided to hold the school picnic on December 16 at Island Hills or Tekoa. It was reported that the work on the new school house had been commenced. One-act Plays

An evening of one-act plays and light sketches was presented by local performers in the Culverden Hall recently. the proceeds being given to the school ground improvement fund and me golf club. Songs by Mr E. A. Bradshaw, accompanied by Mrs Bradshaw, and pianoforte solos by Miss Eva Black provided a pleasant interlude in the evening’s entertainment. The lowest rainfall since 1929 was recorded for the month of October in Culverden by the postmaster. A total of 68 points of ram fell compared with 06 in 1929 and 3.06 inches in 1936 for the month of October. Rain fell on seven days compared with six days for the corresponding period last y e jh\ total for the 10 months is 15.56 inches as against 22.80 inches for 1036.

ELLESMERE DOMAIN BOARD

WORK AT DUNSANDEL DOMAIN Mr R. T. McMillan presided over a meeting of the Ellesmere Domain Board held at Leeston. The chairman and secretary were asked to interview the Commissioner of Crown Lands about a survey of the Ellesmere Domain for the preparation of leases. The Dunsandel Bowling Club applied for assistance in the provision of a pumping plant and for other work at the Dunsandel Domain. A grant of £2O was made on condition that the club provided a tank for a general water supply for the domain.

DRAMA FESTIVAL AT CHEVIOT

A non-competitive drama festival was held on Wednesday evening m the Cheviot Town Hall, when members of the Cheviot and Domett Drama Clubs, under the direction of Mr Cr. SWIMMING AT LEESTON

CLUB REFORMED

At a meeting of swimming enthusiasts at Southbridge, over which Mr R. B. Willis presided, it was decided to reform the swimming club, which had not functioned last year because of the infantile paralysis epidemic. The following officers were elected; —Patron, Mr W. G. Hill; president, Mr T H. Bennett: vice-presidents. Messrs W. T. Nidd and W. Hall; auditor, Mr A J. Inwood; secretary and treasurer. Mr W. Hall: committee. Mesdames Wilson and Paterson. Dr. E. W. Hunt, and Messrs Habgood and L. Butts, with the officers; caretaker, Mr M. Nidd. # The bath was reported to be in a fair state of repair and November 18 was chosen as opening day.

CENTENNIAL AT AKAROA

PROGRESS ASSOCIATION MEETS The raising of funds for the Akaroa centennial celebrations was discussed at the meteing of the Akaroa Progress Association, when the president, Mr E. Longden, presided over a good attendance of members. , r , The Akaroa Golf Club, Akaroa Volunteer Fire Brigade, and Akaroa Football Club sent donations in reply to the circular letter recently forwarded by the association seeking support. .1 he Akaroa Silver Band also ■ offered its support. It was reported that the secretary to Rear-Admiral the Hon. E. R. Drummond had written, in reply to a letter from the Town Clerk, that a concert would be given by H.M.S. Leander and H.M.S. Achilles when the ships visited Akaroa next week. Mr E. Liongden, the Mayor (Mr F. R. E. Davis), and Messrs P. G. Riches, J. Drummond, and W. E. M. JacobsOn were appointed a committee to meet the ships’ conceit parties and complete arrangements for an entertainment to be held on November 16. These were provisional arrangements. It was decided that the Mayor call a public meeting on November 24, when the working committee and officials for the centennial celebrations fund would be appointed. Dr. W. J. Edginton said that lie considered every citizen should join, in the interests of Akaroa. An appeal had been made.

Church Bazaar The annual bazaar and sale of work for which the Presbyterian Ladies Guild has been busily working for some time was held in the Sunday schoolroom on Thursday and was most successful. There was a large attendance of church members and friends, including a number from Wainui, Duvauchelle, Robinson’s Bay, and Takamatua. " , The Rev. W. R. Bartle declared the function open • and congratulated the womert upon the well-stocked stalls. He apologised for the absence of the Mayor, Mr F. R. E. Edginton; sweets stall. Mrs W. B. Ramsay; flower stall, Mrs R. C. Narbey; competitions, Mesdames W. J. Thompson and C. Dalbeth. . The sweets competitions, m the charge of Mrs Dalbeth, were won hy Mrs M. Richardson, Mrs ,W. O’Connor, and Miss Grace Mitchell.

Personal Miss Phyllis Helps has returned to North Canterbury after a short visit to her parents. Mr and Mrs A. M. Helps, Mount Pleasant, Akaroa Mrs W. Gundy and Miss Jean Gundy, Waimate, have returned from a visit to Mrs G. E. Whelch, Balguerie street, Akaroa.

Miss Stephanie Armstrong, “Mount Vernon,” Akaroa, has left to take up a position in Christchurch.

Regatta Club The annual report and balance-sheet of the Akaroa Regatta Club were adopted at the meeting, when the commodore. Mr F. R. E. Davis, presided. Mr W. E. M. Jacobson, hon, secretary, presented the report, which showed that the last year had been one of the most momentous in the history of the club. For the first time in its existence, the New Zealand championship had been held on the Akaroa harbour. Generous support had enabled the committee to provide a splendid programme. Many congratulations had been received from all parts of New Zealand from rowing officials.

The year had started with a debit balance of £4 6s 3d, and concluded with a credit of £l3 Is 4d, including a credit of £l3 3s Id from the championship funds. As there were so few members present those who attended agreed with the chairman that greater public interest was necessary and it was decided to invite citizens to attend the next meeting, when officers would be elected, and the programme decided. Suggestions were made to make the programme more comprehensive by adding swimming races and other aquatic competitions. Mr L. J. Vangioni, hon. treasurer of the championship regatta fund, presented the audited balance-sheet, which was adopted. It was decided to ask the Akaroa Borough Council to take charge of the championship book, with all details, and the signatures of officials and visiting oarsmen from all over New Zealand.

CRICKET

ANISEED V. KAIKOURA The Aniseed Cricket Club played a match with the Kaikoura Club recently. Aniseed beat the visiting team. Scores were:— Aniseed, 156 (O’Byrne 47, Biggs 2V, Lester 27). Bowling; D. Barker took five wickets for 19; J. Reid, two for 14; McLennan, two for 28. Kaikoura, 103 (McLennan 29, Brtttenden 23). Bowling: Steele took five wickets for 9.

RAINFALL AT LITTLE RIVER

The rainfall for October at Little River, recorded by Mr D. Richards, Okuti Valley, was 1.23 in. Rain fell on four days, the maximum fall on one day being .71in on October 26. The rainfall for this year to October 31 was 33.55 in. For the first 10 months of 1936 it was 62.09 in. The rainfall for October. 1936, was ,95in.

OCTOBER WEATHER

SPRINGBANK

The rainfall at Springbank for October was exceptionally light. Rqin fell on six days, and only .37 inches were recorded, compared with October last year, when 1.96 inches fell, and October, 1935, 2.38 inches. The total rainfall this year to date is 16.29 inches, compared with 23.37 inches for 1936, and 18.43 inches for 1935.

WEATHER AT KAIKOURA

Rain fell on seven days, a total of 35 points, at Kaikoura in October. The maximum fall was’ 28 points ■on October 14.

SOCIAL AT HALSWELL

A card party and dance were held by the Halswell Hall Committee to augment its funds. Competitions in the cardroom were won by Mrs S. Hayes and Mrs G. Withers, Messrs J. Burke and P. Symes. In the dance hall novelty dances were won by Miss E. Rogers and Mr J. Illingworth, Mrs and Miss Thompson, and Miss Woods and Mr Thompson. Dance music was supplied by Mr Alex. Campbell’s orchestra, and Messrs F. R. Wilhelm and L. Adams were masters of ceremonies.
