LORD RUTHERFORD'S DEATH
RESOLUTION OF ACADEMIC BOARD
The following resolution on the death of Lord Rutherford has been passed by the Academic Board of the University of New Zealand, and will be sent to Lady Rutherford with an assurance of the board's deep sympathy:— "The Academic Board places on record its deep regret at the unexpected death of New Zealand's most brilliant scholar, Baron Rutherford of Nelson, 0.M., F.R.S. Endowed alike with a masterly experimental skill and an unrivalled power of probing deep into the innermost mysteries of Nature he made contributions to human knowledge which rival those of the greatest of our race, and with it all there remained that charm of manner and dominant yet simple personality which enabled him to exercise so wide an influence upon every aspect of scientific life. To few, if any, has it been given to leave behind so notable a record of achievement, aifd it was but a fitting acknowledgement of his outstanding ability that he stood at the moment of his death the acknowledged leader of the scientific world. Science mourns the passing of its great leader, but finds some measure of consolation in the abiding inspiration of his leadership which will live for years to come."
