DRAMATIC CHASE
SEQUEL TO ATTACK ON TRAFFIC INSPECTOR
TWO YOUTHS ARRESTED
(rKESS ASSOCIATIOM TKLEGIUU.)
WANGANUI, November 2.
A dramatic chase from Ohakune down the Para Para road toward Wanganui from a point near Karioi ensued to-night, after Traffic Inspector Hardigan. of Ohakune. had been attacked and rendered unconscious about 8 p.m. . While driving in his car several miles south of Karioi, Inspector Hardigan noticed two young men removing benzine from one of a number of drums on the roadside. He stopped, and upon approaching them he was set upon and rendered unconscious. When he regained his senses he discovered that the keys had been removed from his car; but he managed to start it. He drove to Ohakune, where he summoned Constable Frost. It was ascertained that the youths had driven down the Para Para road, and after advising the Wanganui police, Constable Frost and Inspector Hardigan set out in pursuit. A car containing a detective and two constables left Wanganui and travelled up the Para Para road, and when it was 20 miles out it passed another car. It was realised that this was the vehicle sought. The police car was turned and its occupants found the other car abandoned in a dark part of the road a short distance away. The constables and the detective set out in chase of the occupants, who had made tor the open country. | Two arrests were made —one of a youth found in an open paddock, and the other of a youth found lying in a ditch. They were brought into Wanganui. The car which was followed had been stolen in Hastings a fortnight ago.
