CALL TO KAIAPOI MINISTER

SPECIAL PRESBYTERY MEETING TO BE HELD

A call from the congregation of Fordell to the Rev. G. W. Hercus, of St. Paul's Presbyterian Church, Kaiapoi, has been forwarded by the Presbytery of Wanganui to the dark of the Christchurch Presbytery. The call will be dealt with at a of Wanganui to the clerk of the ChristPresbytery at St. David's Church, Sydenham, to-morrow evening.

LOSS OF SUB-GRADE BY KAIAPOI SCHOOL

EDUCATION BOARD TO BE APPROACHED

The chairman (the Rev. G. W. Hercus) presided at the monthly meeting of the Kaiapoi School Committee, held on Monday evening. The headmaster reported that the school had dropped a sub-grade. The average attendance required over the period for which the grading was calculated was 319, which was two short of the required number. The roll number was now 332 with a prospect of a further increase. On the motion of Mr Bollington, it was decided to advise the Canterbury Education Board of the position and to ask that the grade of the school be reinstated if possible. The chairman drew attention to the change of management of the Kaiapoi technical classes, and on his suggestion it was agreed that the committee should do all in its power to foster a better attendance at the evening classes. Mesdames Rinaldi and Mcintosh were appointed a sub-committee to confer with the school staff in arranging a school concert in aid of the annual picnic fund. The, chairman said that he would not be present at the next meeting, and tendered his resignation as a member of the committee. Mr Tourell, in moving the acceptance of the resignation, spoke in appreciation of Mr Hercus s assistance to the School Committee in the welfare and progress of the school. Other members of the committee also spoke of the excellent work done by Mr Hercus for the committee and as a resident of the {own.

DANCE RECITAL AT KAIAPOI

The annual dance recital was given by Miss Daphne Buchanan's pupils at the Rialto Theatre, Kaiapoi, on Monday evening. There was a large and appreciative audience. OBITUARY

MR A. BROWN

Mr A. Brown, whose death occurred recently at the age of 78 years at the home of his nephew, Mr H. Brown, Southbrook, was a resident of Hororata. Mr Brown came from Queensland, Australia, with his parents, who settled at "The Downs," Hororata. Mr Brown was educated at the Hororata School, and he took up farming. ,Mr Brown was not married and is survived by his sister, Mrs J. Syme, of Hororata, and Mr W. Brown, also of Hororata. The funeral, which left the home of his nephew, Southbrook, for the Hororata Public Cemetery, was largely attended. The burial service was conducted by the Rev. R. McGregor, and the pall-bearers were Messrs W. Brown, H. Brown, J. Ballagh, and H. Harris.

GARDEN PARTY AT BROOKDALE

A garden party, organised by the St. John's Ladies' Guild, Cheviot, was held at "Brookdale," Parnassus, the home of Mr R. E. McDougall, of Christchurch, on Saturday afternoon. Stalls were erected on the verandah, and an enjoyable afternoon was spent. Stall-holders were as follows: — Work stall, Mesdames England and Fuller; cakes, Mesdames L. H. Foster, C. G. Abbot, and F. Gurnsey; sweets, Mesdames E. Marshall, J. A. Rentoul, and Miss Jess Forbes; bran tub, Mrs G. Hiatt and Miss Noreen Cottrell; produce, Mesdames D. Bush and DampierCrossley: afternoon tea, Mesdames S. E. Pettengill, A. W. Leaman, Miss Leaman, and Mrs Downes; competitions, Messrs Geo. McDonald, C. Whitehead, and C. England. The following were the winners in competitions:—Doll, Mr T. E. Kerr; Christmas cakes, Jack Oakley and Mr H. McCully.

KAIKOURA BOWLING CLUB OPENS SEASON

The Kaikoura Bowling Club opened its season during the week-end. The weather was idea!, and there was a large number of members present. The president (Mr A. Howard) welcomed those present, and asked Mrs .Howard to throw up the kitty, and Mrs F. Smith to play the ftrst bowl.

ORPHANAGE GARDEN PARTY AT DOYLESTON

At the home of Mr G. W. R. Osborne. "Winfield," Doyleston, a garden party was held by the Leeston Methodist Circuit Ladies' Guild, in aid of the orphanage at Papanui. There were stalls, games, and competitions, and a pleasant afternoon was spent
