EELS AS A FOOD
TO THE EDITOR OF THK TIIESS. Sir. —The use of canned or frozen eels as an export proposition is an idea which has been advocated several times in recent years. I think some small experimental shipments were made, but the experiment could not have been very encouraging or the business would have developed. However, I believe there are possibilities in the project and would say that the Department of Industries and Commerce should investigate the possibilities of establishing an oversea market. It is an indisputable fact that eels are increasing very rapidly in our rivers and lakes, and that they are a very grave menace to both fish and waterfowl. If it is impracticable to establish an export market, and we wish to preserve the fish and waterfowl of our lakes and rivers, something of a very drastic character will have to be undertaken to deal with the eels and also other enemies of both native and Imported game.—Yours, etc., JP B Ataahua, November 2, 1937.
