POSSIBILITY OF NEW INDUSTRY
(PRESS ASSOCIATION TEI.EG2AI!.)
HASTINGS. November 2. An experiment which may result m the establishment of a new primary industry in Hawke's Bay is now being embarked upon in Hastings. The F ro " posal is to test the possibilities of growing rice, and, if it can be grown, whether it can be ripened ana harvested. The idea emanated from a visit recantly to Australia by Mr JWattie, of Wattie's Canneries. Ltd., who was impressed by the development that had taken place in tne rice-growing industry in Australia ana in perticular in the vicinity of. Leeton, in New South Wales. He was given a sheaf of ripened rice harvesting time there, and it has been decided to plant this seed in two smau beds at Cornwall Park to see if it « ,UI stow and mature in this district. < Mr Watlie considers climatic tions in this part of Hawke's Bay very similar to those in the Leeton district and judging from his examination °jtheir products, such as peaches ano pears, the productivity of the soil *» measurably better than in New Souw Wales.
