SMALL RAINFALL IN OCTOBER

ADVERSE EFFECT NOTED ON PLANTATIONS

The adverse effect of considerably less than one inch of rainfall in October has been marked in the growth of seedlings planted on areas controlled by the Selwyn Plantation Board, stated a report to the board’s monthly meeting yesterday. Nevertheless, fair headway had been made, and if occasional showers fell in the next few weeks, a reasonable amount of success in afforestation might be expected. A big quantity, more than 60.000 of surplus Oregon seedlings had been distributed all over Canterbury, to 45 applicants, at the cost of packing, it was reported. Excellent headway was being made in exploitation work done at the board’s three mills, which were running to full capacity. The month’s appraisement .of timber for milling amounted to 383.315 super, feet. The report was discussed at length by the meeting, over which Mr L. J Poff presided.
