WOMEN’S TEMPERANCE UNION

NORTH CANTERBURY DISTRICT Mrs Hall presided at the monthly meeting of the North Canterbury District Executive of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union. It was decided that the district officers should attend the provincial convention to be held at Waimate from September 14 to 16. Mrs White reported on mental hospital visiting undertaken by unions. A concert had been given at the reformatory by Mrs Donald’s party. A meeting was arranged for September 21. to be held in the Richmond Presbyterian Church to form a union in the district. Ten unions reported activities for the month. Members of the Spreydon Union served morning tea. CHRISTCHURCH BRANCH Miss Henderson presided at the fortnightly meeting of the Christchurch branch of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union. A letter was read from the Sydenham Union accepting an Invitation to arrange a programme for the next meeting of the branch, when Franchise Day will be celebrated. It was decided to invite membars of the St. Albans, Linwood. and Opawa Unions. A temperance fact was read, also extracts from the Vanguard.” An invitation was extended by the North Canterbury District Executive for members to attend an afternoon social at its rooms on the first Wednesday of next month It was decided to celebrate Maori Day on the second meeting day m October. SUMNER BRANCH Mias A. E. Henderson presided over a social afternoon for the members of the Sumner branch of the Women s Christian Temperance Union. A resolution of sympathy was passed with the relatives of the Hon. L. M. Isitt. Items were contributed by Misses Hazel Ford and Thornley. The hostesses were Mesdames Anderson. Ford, and Hay. . Miss Henderson also presided over the regular monthly meeting. Mrs B. Anderson was appointed representative to the convention. Miss Henderson gave an address on the advantages gained by women in taking their place in the political life of the country. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Hay, Carter, and Ford. METHODIST LADIES’ GUILD Miss I. Palmer presided at the monthly meeting of the Ladies’ Guild of the New Brighton Methodist Church. The secretary reported that “Women’s Sunday” had been most sueccssful* It was decided to send a donation of 10s to help the orphanages’ fund. Members stood in silence in a motion' of sympathy to the relatives of the late Mrs Rountree, one of the oldest members of the guild. A welcome was extended to Mrs J. Douglas on her return to the guild after a long illness, also to Mrs Ozier, president of the Edgeware Road Ladies Guild, who gave an interesting talk on the work done by members. Hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames A. Christiansen and W, PeppereU. ■
