BUDGE BEATS VON CRAMM IN FIVE SETS a SENOUITA LIZANA WINS WOMEN'S SINGLES (UNITED I'BEiiS ASSOCIATION— COPYttIGJIT.) (Received September 12, 11.20 p.m.) FOREST HILLS, September 11. J. D. Budge (U.S.A.) beat G. von Cramm (Germany), 6-1, 7-9, 6-1, 3-6. 6-1, in the final of the American singles championships. Senorita A. Lizana (Chile) beat Ml'e. J. Jedrzejowska (Poland), 6-4, 6-2, in the final of the women's singles. Budge beat F. A. Parker (U.S.A.) in the semi-final, 6-2, 6-1, 6-3. The greatest crowd in the history of American tennis besieged the gates and offered from eight to 10 dollars for tickets normally costing less than three dollars. Thousands were shut out. The stadium was filled with a' capacity crowd of 14,000, who saw one of the most thrilling matches within memory. Budge's three sets won to 6-1 do not truly reflect the play. Von Cramm battled valiantly, but Budge was invincible. Von Cramm was brilliant in the second set, serving and smashing viciously and winning after a series of bristling rallies. Budge recovered in the third set, driving and volleying flawlessly. Von Cramm cleverly mixed lobs with deep cross-court drives in the fourth. He was slightly tired in the fifth and was unable to with Budge's sweeping drives. Senorita Lizana' won without trouble, countering Mile. Jedrzejowska's hard-hitting attack with her topspin backhand and baffling dropshots. After the presentation ceremony in a crowded marquee, Senorita Lizana fainted, and did not revive until she was carried to the clubhouse where strychnine was injected. CANTERBURY ASSOCIATION LOSS ON YEAR'S WORKING A loss on the year's working of £436 14s 2d is shown in the annua 1 report and balance-sheet of the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association to bs presented to the annual meeting of delegates next Monday. The principal cause of the loss, the report states, was the large increase in the cost of maintenance of Wilding Park, including an inevitable increase in wages and lack of revenue from the visits of overseas players. The committee will be faced with the necessity of introducing, early in the year, economies wherever possible. It is ,a matter for regret, the report says, that there were no visits from touring overseas * teams during the last season, and there is little prospect of any for the coming season. While the difficulties of these tours are admitted, the committee feels that in the interests of tennis in New Zealand every possible effort should be made to secure regular visits from I overseas players.
