SUBMARINES OFF CARTAGENA
ONE REPORTED SUNK BY COAST BATTERIES DIVERS SENT OUT TO MAKE INVESTIGATION (Received September 12, 11.30 p.m.) VALENCIA, September 11. Two mystery submarines off Cartagena fired on the coast batteries. It is believed that one was sunk and divers have been sent out to investigate. An official account of the so-called naval battle between a rebel cruiser and Loyalist warship states that the Government cruiser Libertad sighted the Canarias at 10.20 a.m. and immediately increased speed to engage her. The vessels exchanged shots at distances of from nine to 11 miles until 11.35 a.m., when the Canarias fled. The , Government vessel again established contact with the Canarias at 5.25 p.m. A gun battle ensued at ranges of from six to seven miles until 7 p.m. Once flames issued from the ■ Canarias’s funnel, and the Libertad j suspended firing for 10 minutes. j Insurgent aeroplanes bombed Re- | publican destroyers without damage, j It is reported from Gibraltar that i the insurgents claim the Libertad is 1 sunk in Cartagena harbour. ; A message from Bilbao says that | General de Llano has disclosed that ; the insurgents bought four sub- , marines which are at present in the , Mediterranean. i A message from Palma says the ] rebel cruiser Canarias captured the! British oil tanker Ormford, which j was fonnerly a Greek vessel. I PLIGHT OF GIJON I
CAPTURE REPORTED TO BE IMMINENT SALAMANCA, September 10. The insurgents' capture of the Mazucho heights has virtually sealed the fate of Gijon, which was reported to be in the hands of extremists. ENGLISH AIRMAN RESCUED PICKED LP BY DESTROYER AT GIJON HENDAYE, September 11. During a severe storm the destroyer Foresight's cutter picked up Mr Rupert Bellville, from Gijon, and took him aboard. The performance indicates that Gijon is not so closely invested as has been reported, but there are numerous faction fights in the streets. Mr Bellville, a wealthy English amateur airman, had been missing since August 25, when he was ordered at the point of the revolver to fly a Government leader from Santander to Gijon.
