RADIO BROADCAST PROGRAMMES

REQUEST FOR RESTORATION OF CLASSICAL HOUR A request is to be made to the Director of Broadcasting, Professor J. Shelley, for the restoration to the Sunday afternoon programmes from national stations of the classical hour of music following on a motion carried at a meeting of the Society for Imperial Culture, on Saturday evening. The matter was raised by Dr. D. E. Hansen, who said that there used to be a fine programme of classical music on Sunday afternoons, but in recent months it had been, deleted. He asked for an expression of opinion from the society to : be forwarded to the Director of Broadcasting. I The chairman. Dr. J. Hight, said that they would have to be sure of their ground before making such a request. He did not think that the classical hour had been cut out right through New Zealand, but only from some stations. He was not fully conversant with the matter, but he had looked at the programmes and they were not the same i as they were some months ago. An assurance was given that Dr. Hansen's information was correct. "I almost think that in some respects the radio is the curse of the day," said Dr. Hansen. "The performance of Mr Ernest Jenner this evening really brought the matter to my mind. There is at present an absolute drought of good music. A society such as this should be in a position to express an opinion on this matter. I move that the Director of Broadcasting be asked to restore the programmes as they were some months ago at least from one station in each island."
