TECHNICAL BEATEN BY I THISTLE ENGLISH CUP SEMI-FINALS The semi-finals of the English Cup knock-out competition were played on Saturday. At English Park Thistle produced its best form of the season to beat Technical Old Boys, winners of the Harley Shield. At Linwood Park, Western led Linwood by one goal to nil at halftime, and went on to win by 6 goals to 2. Conditions were ideal for the games, and play was interesting without being spectacular. The final of the English Cup will be j played next Saturday at English Park. [Thistle and Western are old rivals, and their contests always arouse keen interest. THISTLE (3) v. TECHNICAL OLD BOYB (2) In the early stages of the game between Thistle and Technical at English Park, there was very little between the teams. Technical kept ahead till half-time, when the scores were 2-1; but after the interval Thistle dominated play and scored two well-earned -goals. Thistle at this stage showed its best form of the season. Technical on the other hand, failed In what was considered to be Its strong department, namely the forwards, between whom there seemed to be very little understanding. Collins, on the left flank, had an off-day, and R. Smith and Almond seldom looked like getting into a scoring position. Sherwood, who deputised for Adie at inside left, spent most of the game covering the left-half position where G. Browne seemed unable to cope with the opposition. T. Lennon and Richardson worked hard in defence. Porter, Muir, and McKenzie, the last line, all played well, particularly when Thistle was forcing the pace in the second half. Thistle must be congratulated for such a fine exhibition, The forwards showed considerable improvement on previous occasions, every man rising to the occasion. W. Sutherland was the best of them, playing splendid football throughout. G. Walker and R, Adam, although slightly subdued, both displayed their true capabilities and put across some fine centres to the goal-mouth. C. Milne and J. Nelligan. hunted well and quickly put a mistake by the Technical defence to advantage. A. Renwick showed representative form at centre half, being well supported by Paton and Dccring. The Thistle full-backs did not appear as solid as Technical's. but Wilson was always safe. The teams were:— Thistle— -J. Greig; A. Wilson. A. Walker; J. Paton, A. Renwick, C. Deering; R. Adam, W. Sutherland, J. Nelligan, C. Milne, and G. Walker. Technical Old Boys—L. McKenzie; A. Porter, T. Muir; D. Richardson, T. Lennon, G. Browne; A. Almond, R. Smith, W. Mitchell, H. Sherwood, and E. Collins. Thistle attacked first; but a fast counter let H. Smith through to Mitchell, who did the rest. Technical 1, Thistle 0. Thistle attacked now from all angles. McKenzie making some grand saves. At last W. Sutherland landed the ball In the net from the penalty area. Technical 1, Thistle 1. Technical resumed the lead almost Immediately, Almond heading through to Mitchell, who rushed in to score between Greig'a legs. Thistle, through Milne, attacked again; but McKenzie was safe, the half-time score being :-rTechnical 2, Thistle 1. Thistle made a sustained effort after the interval; but fine defensive work by Technical checked the advances. At last from a corner by R. Adam, Nelligan got well on to the ball and gave McKenzie no chance. Technical 2, Thistle 2. Thistle had the better of another spell of play and was next to score. From another corner by Adam, W. Sutherland headed tho ball home with a brilliant effort. Thistle 3, Technical 2. Technical now made a last-minute effort to even the scores, but with some fine chances offering the shooting failed and the game ended: Thistle 3, Technical Old Boys 2. Referee: Mr S. Doree. WESTERN (6) V. LINWOOD (Z) Linwood, the champion reserve team, had shown good form in this competition against senior A elevens, and up to the Interval held the strong Western combination well. After half-time Linwood s defence Slackened off, Western seizing the Chance to register five quick goals. During Ik sluggish finish Linwood got going, netting two good goals. Both teams showed fair combination. Western, however, had more finish and, with a more experienced back division to help the forwards, always had the game well in hand. Linwood by no means disgraced itself. The team has very promising material to work on, and witn Tta proper development one of the oldest suburban clubs may again contest the top places In the senior champion- * Williams, Evans, and Thompson all were prominent in the Linwood delfflM, although all were caught out of position at The l 'nalf line proved a useful trio with Liddle most prominent. W. Thomas was the outstanding forward, being ably supported by Duncan and Chappell. Western was without W. Ives, G. Robert, and J. White. S. Cflwtheiay was hack again, and with A. McMillan, buckled some likely Linwood, srtli.B. M. Gordon was the general behind most of the Western attacks having a handy ally in R. Henderson. W. White and O. Ellin shafed the honours the best forwards, with K. Mall and O. Ellis putting in useful auxiliary work. The teams were.Western—J. Gaffaney; S. Cawtheray, A, McMillan; R. Henderson, M. Gordon, J. Mallinson; W. White, O. Ellis, G. Smith. M White, and E. Hall. _. Linwood-A. Williams; J. Evans. S. Thompson; A. Harland.W. Liddle, H. Goddard; F. Lathan, W. Dunjisn, J. Chappie, T. Dobson, and W. Thomas. Intermediate play marked the start of the gameTEllis. White, and j Smith being prominent for Western, while Thomas. Dobson? and Goddard made ground for Linwood. At last Western made A fast sally. W. White snapping up a pass to arTgle the ball into the net. Thomas looked likely next for Linwood: but at halftime the score was still: Western 1, Unwood 0. Western was first to settle down after half-time? Smith gathering in Hall's centre to give Williams little chance. Western 2 'G l ood' o wlrk' by Ellis and White again let Hall repeat the performance, Smith scoring. Western 3, Linwood 0. Western was now on top. Smith scoring the side's fourth goal soon after. Isolated sorties by Linwood failed through lack of support, and Western was back again. W White passing to Smith, who scored- Another raid by Western gavo ivr -White an easy chance. Western t). Linwoodlo. At last Linwood rallied, DunciS W Lathan, and Chappell combining for the last-named to goal. Linwood made another raid. Duncan snapping the ball to Goddard. who scored. Linwood continued to press without further result. Final score:— Western «, Linwood 2. Referee: Mr G. Cox. WELLINGTON RESULT CMiasa association nttonka.)
