WORK FOUND FOR THIRTYFIVE MEN The local placement officer reports that his office has found work for 35 men this week. Twenty-five were permanent positions and the balance were temporary. A strong demand is being made for farm workers. Good teamsters are sought locally, and also from southern districts. There is a call for dairy, farm workers for the West Coast. The placements for the week included 14 farm hands. Other permanent placements covered quartz miners. motor mechanic, tailor's cutter, upholsterer, and store hand. Four fitters were included in the temporary positions. State placements, which are not included in placement totals, consisted of painters to Lyttelton and Springfield, an electric wireman (locally*, and labourers to various full-time work. Under the Youth Campaign scheme. 21 satisfactory placements of workers from 18 to 25 years of age have been recorded. A specially appointed contact officer of the Labour Department is now engaged in interviewing prospective employers in the carpentering and allied trades. Inquiries as to the scheme are being received from a number of youths anxious to be placed in work in a skilled trade. Since April 1 last, the total number of positions found for workers under the Christchurch centre is 857, of which 394 were permanent.
