The holes made in the course at the Hunt Club meeting have been filled in with riverbed silt, and already there is quite a marked growth in the grass. The tanplough track has worked up well, and has never been in such good order as at the present time. There was a very sharp and white frost at Wingatui this morning, but it did not affect fast work, as what little there was took place on the tan-plcugh track. Hanlon was going better than Janet Gaynor at the end of six furlongs in Imin 19 2-ssec, Valantua just finished in front of Brilliant Boa over five furlongs in Imin 5 2-ssec. Vallock completed a circuit by sprinting over the last three furlongs in 42 l-ssec. Ortyx, the Wingatui candidate for the John Grigg Stakes to be run next week, was twice sprinted down the straight with the Paper Money—Last Note colt, and is an attractive mover, but she may not be ready to show hor brief

Ortyx, the Wingatui candidate for the John Grigg Stakes to be run next week, was twice sprinted down the straight with the Paper Money—Last Note colt, and is an attractive mover, but she may not be ready to show her best.

Linguist appeared to be stopping at the end of live furlongs, run in Imin 4 3-ssec.

The three-year-old Stromboli, who lightened up after his trip to the National meeting, ran half a mile with Gay Vixen in 51 2-ssec, and was going the better of the pair. Nattie, who has rejoined G. Fielding’s stable after wintering well, was given half-pace work. She should not take long in coming to hand, and looks a sounder and more robust mare than at any part of last season. F. Shaw has Viking in work again, and he. too, has been well done by during the winter. The best looking two-year-old in work at Wingatui this spring is the 23months old colt by Nightmarch from Palantua. This son of the 1930 and 1933 New Zealand Cup winners is a compact bay, and though a little on the small side, measures better than he looks, and is quality all over. He has not done any fast work on the tracks yet. but is a very nice mover, and a fast walker.
