CONDITION IMPROVED INJURED TROTTING OFFICIAL Mr R. A. Ferguson, the clerk of the course at Addington, who was injured when his horse fell while he was trying to catch a loose horse during the last race on Saturday, was reported early this morning to be showing a slight improvement. Mr Ferguson suffered severe injuries to his head, and it was thought that he had a fracture of the skull. He recovered consciousness on Sunday afternoon, and his condition has improved'since. Dragged from a hot pool by her husband who was himself badly scalded in the process, Mrs Merana Konui, aged 38, a Maori woman, died in the Rotorua Hospital yesterday, from shock and severe scalds suffered when she fell backwards into a thermal pool at Ohinemutu on Saturday night. Mrs Konui, accompanied by her husband and another man, went to a hot pool commonly used by the natives as a bath. She left the bath before the other two and was sitting on a rock ledge a short distance away when she suddenly appeared to fall backwards into a small and very, hot pool on the other side of the rock. Her husband jumped into the pool and dragged his wife out, lifting her over the edge with the assistance of his companion before he himself collapsed, Mrs Konui was unconscious when admitted to the hospital and died at noon the following day. Mr Konui was also admitted to hospital, but his injuries are not as serious and it is considered that he will recover.

KILLED BY FALLING TREE

PALMERSTON N„ August 9. Robert James, an elderly man, was killed by a falling tree, at Tatola Flat, near Apiti, this afternoon. James and O. Pussell were felling a totara, which became caught up in another. They chopped through two more trees, but one was rotten, and when it snapped suddenly James, who was very deal, tried to jump clear, but failed. He was jammed by the chest against a stump. Pussell sawed the tree through, but was unable to release his companion, who must have been killed instantly. The police and Dr. Barnicoat were taken to the scene of the tragedy by settlers, and the body was brought out.
