A TEAMSTER’S DUTIES
TO THR EDITOR OF THR PRESS Sir, —I see a letter in “The Press” today signed “Est Modus in Rebus,” asking for the correct rules of a teamster’s duties. Well, I am not sure whether there are any correct rules for teamsters, as 1 agree with “Est Modus in Rebus” that nearly every farmer has different working hours for his teamsters. The hours which I think are the right ones for teamsters and should be enforced are: 5.30 a.m., at which time the teamster gets his horses into the stables. Start work at 8 o’clock. If the teamster has to go into the stable at dinner time I think it is only fair that he should unyoke at 11.45 to get his horses in the stable and fed by 12 o’clock. There should be an hour for lunch time. That would make the time for starting up again 1 o’clock. Then the horses ought to have tightchains for another four hours, till 5 o’clock, at which time the teamster goes home to feed and unharness his team. At most places the teamster gets his tea (or dinner, as the case may be) at 6 o’clock. In that case the feed he gives his horses when he enters the stable at 5.15 would do them until he had his tea or dinner. Now, if the horses get as much as they can eat after the teamster comes out from his tea I think that 8 o’clock is a reasonable time to turn them out for the night. I think to leave the horses in the stable till 9 o’clock, as “Est Modus in Rebus” states his boss wants him to do, is out of the question. The hours which I have mentioned above are, to my way of thinking, the ones that should be enforced for all teamsters.—Yours, etc., A TEAMSTER. August 7, 1937.
