Exceptionally Gruelling ROAD TEST I ... Wonderful Performance hy:— SINGER “NINE” VETERAN CAR AFTER 220,000 MILES CIRCLES NORTH ISLAND 1937 NEW SALOON COMPLETES SAME JOURNEY IN 48 HOURS, INCLUDING ALL STOPS Probably Clever have any cars given greater evidence of reliability than the two Singer Saloons which completed a gruelling journey o S 1229 miles round the North Island together on Saturday, May Bth. The more remarkable performance was that of the veteran Singer, which, having previously completed over 220,000 miles in taxi and private service, serenely circled the North Island without causing the two drivers one anxious moment. Precautions were taken to ensure that the test was purely one of reliability and not of speed. Speed limits and all other road regulations were strictly adhered to, and NO MECHANICAL ADJUSTMENTS WERE MADE ANYWHERE EN ROUTE. The test has indeed proved a triumph for British Singer Motor Engineering. MEW 1937 SINGER COMPLETES SAME ROyTE IN 48 HOURS—STOPS INCLUDED—ALSO WITHOUT A HITCH! ALL SPEED LIMITS OBSERVED BY BOTH CARS. SINGER, the English car with a reputation for Reliability, again proves its worth in this and other respects! Leaving Newmarket on Monday last, the Singer Junior, illustrated at the top and bottom left, with a mileage record of over 220,000 already to its credit, set off on a round-the-North Island Reliability Test of 1207 miles. Running to a pre-arranged schedule, with officially checked arrival and departure times at the various towns marked on the map on right, without mechanical adjustment, completed this arduous trip round the North Island and back without a hitch! No minor or major breakdowns were experienced, and no adjustments of any kind whatsoever were made. And remember! This sterling performance was put up by a Singer that had already travelled over TWO HUNDRED AND TWENTY THOUSAND MILES in taxi work! BOTH CARS WERE OFFICIALLY WELCOMED AT NEWMARKET BY THE MAYOR, MR S. DONALDSON I have the pleasure of announcing the triumphal "Reliability” Trial Run of 1207 miles around the North Island, carried out by these two “SINGER” cars, one of which bad done the phenomenal mileage of 220,307 miles before commencing this "Reliability” run, which has been completed in the time of 57 hours 54 minutes, without any mechanical adjustments whatsoever. The other "SINGER” car, which has also completed the test run over the same route, is a STOCK MODEL, Twodoor SEDAN, and it has put up a wonderful performance in 48 hours, including all stoppages, re-fuelling, and change of drivers during the route—yet for no part of the journey has the vehicle EXCEEDED ANY SPEED LIMIT. When yon realise the gruelling test over mountainous country, in places practically impassable owing to heavy rain, slips, etc., during the past several days, together with the fact that one day alone twenty-six mobs of sheep were encountered during torrential downpour, It will make yon realise the astounding quality, ruggedness, and reliability of this wonderful BRITISH product—THE “SINGER” CAR. Interviewed at the conclusion of their trip, Messrs Bone and Keegan, drivers of the veteran Singer, stated that they were particularly pleased with the performance of the car. At no stage were they caused one moment’s anxiety, and experienced neither mechanical nor tyre trouble. The utmost precautions were taken to make the test complete and fair. All speed and other regulations were carefully observed. The car was checked-in at all stopping points en route, shown on the map, by responsible people, including Mayors, county chairmen, traffic officials, and A.A. officers. TOOLS AND TYRE EQUIPMENT WERE SEALED BEFORE THE JOURNEY COMMENCED, AND THE SEALS REMAINED UNBROKEN TO THE FINISH OF THE TRIP. PETROL CONSUMPTION—The car averaged 37 \ miles to the gallon of benzine, notwithstanding the fact that between Gisborne and Napier no less than 26 mobs of sheep were encountered, and the road was mistaken at Opotiki, the result being that the car was driven over the treacherous, very hilly and little-used old motor road. OFFICIALLY OBSERVED THROUGHOUT TRIP—The drivers, Messrs Todd, McL. Wallace and Miller, were accompanied by a well-known motoring authority, Mr L. Grieves, who acted as official observer. They report an uneventful trip, accomplished without a trace of difficulty (not even a puncture to mar the smoothness of the trip). Petrol consumption worked out at 38 4 miles per gallon. Weather conditions were severe, including particularly heavy rain and frost, and the road between New Plymouth and Te Kuiti is reported to be in a bad state owing to road reconstruction. However, the car came through the test with flying colours, and reflects enormous credit on the British engineers who built her. Hokitika-ROSS & BURT. History of the Singer that had Already Done 220,000 Miles Being one of the principals ot the Tiny Tot Taxi Service of Hamilton. I put this Singer car into commission as a taxi, and used it as such until May 26th, 1936. During these five years of strenuous taxi work, the mileage covered was 210.000. and since then the car has done a further 10.000 miles on private work, making a total of 220.000 miles. The car never held me up with any body or engine troubles, and only small adjustments and running repairs were effected. On taxi work the car averaged 40 miles to the gallon, which is remarkable, as the car was often overloaded. Yours sincerely, N. S. LEE.
