CANTERBURY TEAMS HONOURED SUCCESSFUL DEFENCE OF TROPHIES Members of the Canterbury lawn tennis teams which last season successfully defended the men's and women's interprovincial trophies, the Anthony Wilding Memorial Shield and the Kathleen Nunneley Casket, were entertained with their friends, by the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association, at a dinner at Stonehurst on Saturday evening. The chairman of the management committee of the association. Mr James Mercer, presided, and proposed the toast of the teams. He said that though Canterbury had won the Wilding Shield on eight occasions last season's was probably the best performance ever recorded by a team from this province. Considering that Wellington, the principal challenger, had in its team the winner and the runnerup in the New Zealand singles championship, one of the New Zealand doubles champions, in fourth place, and still another player who had long been recognised as one of the Dominion's best, the result was indeed a credit to the Canterbury players, who again showed that they had the haw? knack of rising to the occasion. The women's team also had played extremely well, and the province was | fortunate in possessing such a strong and even four as Misses T. Poole, 1. Poole. E. Rudkin, and N. Bishop. Mr C. Angas, captain of the shield team, replied on behalf of the players. Mr R. Browning, donor of the provincial representative badges, presented the 1936-37 bars to the players who also received framed photographs of the teams. . _ The toast of the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association was proposed *- Mr H. A. Barnett. and responded to by Mr G. L. Berry.
