CHILD DROWNED i FALL INTO STREAM AT PAPANUI Valerie Lusk, aged four, the only child of Mr R. Lusk, of College avenue, Papanui, was drowned in the Strowan stream at St. Andrew's College. at noon, yesterday. The child, it is understood, was playing on the bank of the river with one of her friends, Judith Patterson, also aged four years, when she fell in. Judith ' Patterson immediately rushed home to her mother, Mrs F. Patterson, at 4 College avenue, and told her that her friend had fallen into the river. Mrs Patterson ran to the scene of the accident, and seeing the girl in the stream, called for help to a passing’ cyclist, Mr Maurice Tim* mings. Mr Timmings dragged the child from the stream and telephoned the police. It is not known how the children came to be near the stream, but Judith Patterson, as was her custom, had gone to meet her father, who usually arrives home on a tram at noon. It is thought that Valerie Lusk accompanied her friend to the tram slop, and when Mr Patterson did not arrive homo on his usual tram, (hey went into the school grounds to play. An inquest into the death of the child was opened yesterday evening before the Coroner, Mr E. C. Lcvvcy. Unsuccessful efforts were made to revive H. Beckett, of Howick, when he was found unconscious in his garage. Beckett, who was a retired farmer, living at Shelly Park. Howick, was discovered by his family when they returned home from a visit to, Auckland about 5 o’clock. The engine of his car was running, and the doors of the garage were only partially opened. Until the arrival of Ur. Armstrong, of Otahuhu, artificial respiration was applied by Beckett’s son. Beckett, who was 64 years old, was a well-known bowler.
