SOCIAL AND PERSONAL Mrs Derrick Orbell (Balmoral, Mackenzie Country) is visiting her mother, Mrs Russell Ritchie (Dunedin). Mrs Arthur Wigley (“Opuha Lodge,” Park lane) is visiting the Hermitage. Miss Vincent (“Te Kainga,” Wai-iti road) has returned from a visit to Mrs .A. Stone (Fendalton). Mrs J. C. Elworthy (Holme Station, Pareora) has returned from a visit to the North Island. Miss Helen Fenwick, who was staying with Mrs Wilfrid White (“Summerhill,” Levels), returned yesterday to Dunedin. Miss Edith Arthur (“Strathdoon,” Timaru) has returned from a visit to Mrs T. J. Rodgers (Palmerston North). Miss Lillias E. Hall, elder daughter of the Rev. J. B. Hall and Mrs Hall, left on Thursday for Singapore, where she is to be married to Mr Geoffrey Prothero-Morgan, only son of Mr David H. Prothero-Morgan (Swansea, Wales). Her sisters, Mrs James Little (Cave) and Miss Jaunetta Hall (Timaru), accompanied her as far as Wellington.

COMING-OF-AGE PARTIES

To mark the twenty-first birthday anniversary ■ of-their second daughter, Eleanor, Mr and Mrs D. Boyd (Radcliff e road, Styx) entertained a number of her, young friends at an enjoyable party. Games, dancing, and competitions were enjoyed, the latter being won by M. Adams, R. Quaid, I. Inwood, and J. Markwick. Music was played by Miss Jean McMillan and Mr lan Harris. Mr and Mrs W, McLaren gave a pleasant party at their home, “The Poplars,” Springston, to celebrate the coming-of-age of their second daughter, Mary Dorothea. Gibbs at their home to c. lebrate the coming-of-age of Verner, only son of Mr and Mrs G. V. Beatty, Coalgate. The evening was spent in community singing, led by Mr Tamblin (Rakaia), with Mr H. W. Cossins (Christchurch) as pianist. Musical items were given by Misses Jean Cossins, Mavis Gibbs, Nella and Lola Tamblin, and Mr Tamblin. Competitions were won by Mesdames C. Henderson and Tamblin, Messrs H. W. Cossins, J. Glasson, and H. C. Ferguson. The birthday cake, made by Mrs L. Gibbs, was cut by Mr V. Beatty, and Mr L. Gibbs congratulated the guest of honour on attaining his majority, and presented him with the customary gold key. Amongst those present were Mr and Mrs G. V. Beatty, Mr and Mrs C. The Styx Band of Hope held its first meeting for the year in the Presbyterian Church, with Mrs Donald presiding. Lantern slides were shown and items were given bv Molly Wenmoth, Dorothy Winder. Gwen Munro, Melva Burborough, Raymond Munro, and Raymond Winder.
