NORTH ISLAND AIR SERVICE
* CONNEXION WITH SOUTH WANTED SUGGESTED ALTERATIONS IN TIME-TABLES [THE PRESS Special Service.] AUCKLA.ND, June 4. The continued need for a one-day air service from Auckland to Christchurch and Dunedin is emphasised by Mr W. R. Fee, president of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce, in a communication which he has sent to the Minister for Transport (the Hon. R. Semple). He considers the demand would be met by an adjustment in the time-table of the south-bound aeroplane irom Palmerston North. The thanks of the chamber for steps the Minister has taken in inaugurating the service between Auckland and Wellington, which is to begin on June 26. are expressed by Mr Fee, who states that its commencement will do much to remove the disappointment that has for some time existed in Auckland because of its claims having been hitherto passed over in the development of air services in tfie Dominion. The fact that the north-bound aeroplane will connect with the machine from Dunedin, he says, has given great satisfaction. "The need for a similar one-day service from Auckland to Christchurch and Dunedin, however, still exists, and the alteration of the proposed timetable to enable a connexion to be made with the south-bound aeroplane at Palmerston North would be greatly appreciated,” Mr Fee explains. “No greater benefit from air services could be conferred upon the business community of this city than to enable the journey to be made to Christchurch or Dunedin in one day. The only adjustment that would be required in the time-table of the south-bound aeroplane from Palmerston North would be to make its time of departure about two hours later than at present. "Moreover, the proposed departure from Auckland at noon and the arrival at Wellington at 3 p.m., has serious disadvantages, in that it would break up the day so that the benefit accruing from this form of fast travel would be largely taken away. The departure of the aeroplane at 8.15 a.m. would, however. not only provide the desired connexion with the south-bound machine at Palmerston North, but would also allow businessmen proceeding to Wellington nearly four additional hours in that city on the day of their arrival.” THREE NEW AEROPLANES NAMED U'RESS ASSOCIATION T Err-CnSAM.) WELLINGTON, June 4. Following the original choice of the names of New Zealand native birds lor the fleet of passenger aeroplanes, Union Airways has continued the sequence for the new Lockheed Electra machines. Kotare (Kingfisher) has been chosen for ZK-AFC. Kuaka (Godwit) for ZK-AFD and Kereru (Wood Pigeon) for ZK-AFE. The other machine will arrive at Auckland at the end of this month and will probably be assembled there. The names of the present fleet operating are Kotuku (White Heron), Ka-rol-0 (Seagull), and Korimako (Bellbird).
