WOMEN'S INSTITUTES

* NORTH CANTERBURY FEDERATION EXECUTIVE MEETING Mrs B. L. Blunden presided at an executive meeting of the North Canterbury Federation of Women’s Institutes. The president and members congratulated Mrs W. Deans upon receiving the Coronation medal. The Dominion executive asked that all information about the maternity inquiry be sent to the executive committee direct, and it was left to Mrs Corcoran, the institute’s representative, to supply the information. The Home Service Association wrote asking the federation to appoint a delegate for the Household Association, and Mrs Davis was appointed delegate. Mrs Ross Macdonald explained that the aim of this association was to arrange that conditions in household service be improved and that a system of careful training be carried out. The following group conveners were appointed:—Cheviot, Mrs Struthers; Hawarden, Mrs Cowie; Lobum, Mrs James Ward; Malvern, Mrs V. A. Turner; Southbridge, Mrs Dick; Templeton, Mrs Meyer; Banks Peninsula, Mrs G. A. Hammond; Scargill. Mrs T. D. McDonald. Permission was given to Mesdames Corcoran and McLeod to form an institute at Tuahiwi. It was decided to hold a meeting of voluntary organisers and group conveners at the Young Men’s Christian Association rooms on June 30. Miss V. McMillan, of the Home Science Department of the University of Otago, addressed the meeting, and explained the terms under which tutors sent out by the Association of Country Education conducted their classes. GLENTUNNEL The June meeting of the Glenturmel Women’s Institute was held m the Public Hall, GlentunneL Mrs L. A. M M r f“J, P W?t»n (Lake Coleridge, gave an interesting demonstration on the making of wood-fibre flowers. Mrs Watson judged the monthly competitions. which resulted:—Soft toy: Mrs W. Tarling 1, Mrs J. Milne 2. Mrs E. Burmeister 3. Thrift toy: Mrs D. Dickie 1, Mrs W. Tarling 2. Specimen bloom: Mrs Burmeister 1, Miss Dickie 2, Mrs W. Tarling 3. For community singing the pianist was Miss I. M. Gilmour. Arrangements were made for the institute birthday to be held on the fourth Fnday in July. The hostesses for the afternoon were Misses G. Charles and I. M. Gilmour. LE DON’S BAY The monthly meeting of the Le Bon’s Bay Women’s Institute was held this week. Mrs Thelning presided. It was decided to hold the birthday party on August 6. ..... Mrs C. W. H. Crotty judged the competitions and made the following awards:—Vase of chrysanthemums: Miss J. Dalglish 1, Mrs Dalglish 2, Miss G Leonardo and Mrs Thelning (equal) 3. Hand-worked handkerchief: Mrs Dalglish 1, Miss J. Dalglish 2, Mrs Bailey and Miss G. Leonardo (equal) 3 'The hostesses were Mrs O’Connell and Mrs Thelning. GREENDALE The Greendale branch of the Women’s Institute held its fifth birthday meeting in the Orange Hall this week. Visitors from Hororata, Burnham, and Coalgate were present. Mrs A. A. Russell (president) presided. During the afternoon musical items were given. The birthday cake, made and presented by Mrs G. H. Ridgen and decorated by Miss Rudd, was cut by the president. Prizes won in the competitions were presented to Mrs L. H. Adams and Mrs H. B. Shipley. A presentation of posies was made by Mrs L. Early for members of the institute to Mrs A. A. Russell and Mrs L. H. Adams. Mrs Russell presented each member of the institute with a birthday card. SOUTHBRIDGE An address on horticulture was given by Mr T. D. Lennie, at the monthly meeting of the Southbridge Women’s Institute. Mrs R. F. Pilkington presided. One new member was elected. Arrangements for the institute birthday party were discussed. Mrs W Deans would give an address at the party. Invitations are to be sent to other institutes and to the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union. Competition results were: Best bloom. Mrs C. Tod 1. Mrs W. G. Hill 2. Mis? Duff 3. Bed socks. McEvedy and R. McLaughlin. From the members. Mrs Pilkington presented an oven dish to Miss Thelma Thoroughgood whose marriage will take nlace shortly. A cushion raffle was won by Mr D. S. Dorreen. Music for dancing was nlayed by Miss Rubv Greenwood Miss S+ace. and Mr and Mrs D. Paterson. Mr K. Beamsley was master of ceremonies. WAKANUI The monthly meeting of the Wakanui Women’s Institute was held in the hall this week. Mrs T. S. Taylor presided. Three new members were elected. It was decided that a tree be planted in the hall grounds to commemorate the Coronation. Mr W. The consolation prize was won by Mrs A. Urquhart. A play reading, arranged by Miss Parson, was given by Mesdames A. McCall, H. Jameson, Misses A. Ward, B. Anderson, J. Worthington, and L. Taylor. The sales table and mystery parcels were in charge of Mrs H. Chappell, both being well patronised.
