MINOR DAMAGE AT RANGIORA

BOISTEROUS NORTH-WESTERLY WIND Minor damsrge was caused throughout the Rangiora district by a very boisterous north-westerly wind on Thursday night. The North Canterbury Electric Power Board’s lines were broken in places and a telephone line between Rangiora and Lobtirn was brought down by a falling branch. The wind was accompanied by heavy, showers of rain and idid not abate until yesterday morning. It rose again once or twice during the day and the weather appeared still unsettled last night. The temperature has been unusually mild at Rangiora all the week, the bright, warm days being greatly enjoyed. Personal Mr C. D. Gilling, who will leave Rangiora to-day to become headmaster of the High Street School, Dunedin, was honoured by the pupils of the Rangiora Borough School yesterday afternoon. Pat Palmer, senior girl, presented him with a chiming clock and extended best wishes for the future. Mr H. C. Garde, who has been on annual holiday, will resume duty as manager of the Union Bank of Australia, Ltd., at Rangiora on Monday. Mr E. J. Rice is acting headmaster of the Rangiora Borough School pending the appointment of a successor to Mr C. D. Gilling. The committee of the school will meet on Monday evening to consider the filling of the vacancy. Mr A. F. Drought, of the-Rangiora staff of the Union Bank of Australia, Ltd., will begin three weeks’ holiday on Monday, part of which he will spend at Oamaru. Unemployment As seasonal work finishes, more men in the Rangiora district are applying for sustenance payments, which will be made fo 98 men next week, compared with 93 this week and 87 last week. Thirty workers will be employed under No. 5 scheme next week, an increase of one on this week’s total. Under the placement scheme, casual work has been found for four men by th% Government Employment Bureau during the week. The bureau has also registered six men as unemployed since last Monday. SPENCER PARK DOMAIN BOARD MORE PINES TO BE PLANTED The annual meeting of the Spencer Park Domain Board was held recently, with Mr W. P. Spencer in the chair. A motion of sympathy with the relatives of Mrs Heyder, a benefactor of the park, was carried in silence. The Minister for Lands advised that the board could not be granted power to lease sections for week-end dwellings. It was decided to endeavour to obtain 1500 pines for further shelter planting this season. The annual report, which was adopted, showed a small credit balance. Mr Spencer was unanimously elected chairman for the fifth successive year.

KAIAPOI BRANCH OF FARMERS’ UNION

DISCUSSION ON COMPULSORY GRADING OF PIGS The monthly meeting of the Kaiapoi branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union was held in the Clarkville Hall. Mr R. Bennett presided and there was an attendance of 17. Several new members were welcomed. The Pig Marketing Association wrote about the suggested compulsory grading of pigs, and after a full discussion it was unanimously decided to forward a resolution to the Minister for Agriculture (the Hon. W. Lee Martin) in favour of improved grading, with a premium for quality. Mr Barker, the organiser for the district, gave a short talk on union matters. answering many questions. Mr G. Brown, who was one of the delegates to the recent provincial conference. gave a report on the proceedings. Mr Brown was congratulated on his appointment to the provincial executive, in place of Mr G. H. Hassall, and a vote of thanks was passed to Mr Hassall in appreciation of his years of service on the executive. It was decided to arrange a lecture on farming topics for the July meeting. A debate among branch members followed, the subject being “That woman’s place is in the home.” The affirmative side was the winner. Mothers’ Union Mrs T. M. Curnow. enrolling member, presided at the monthly meeting of the Kaiapoi branch of the Mothers’ Union held in St. .Bartholomew’s schoolroom on Thursday afternoon. After a short service in the church, conducted by the Rev. T. M. Curnow. the Rev. P. Revell, acting-missioner of Christchurch, addressed the meeting on the social life of the Church of England. Hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames J. C. Simpson, L. R. Oram, M. Greenwood, A. Gray, and L. BurEducational Association The weekly meeting of the Kaiapoi Workers’ Educational Association class was held in the Foresters’ Hall this week. The tutor for the evening was Mr G. Lawn, who gave an instructive address on economics. FISHERIES’ COMMITTEE IN KAIKOURA ♦DEPUTATIONS HEARD The Sea Fisheries Investigation Committee, comprising Mr James Thorn, M.P. (chairman), Mr M. W. Young. Assistant Chief Inspector ot Fisheries, and Mr E. Seed, visited Kaikoura on Thursday afternoon, investigating the conditions in this district in every aspect, including fish supplies. earnings and marketing and refrigeration. Several deputations met the committee. Ladies’ Golf Club The Kaikoura Ladies’ Golf Club played the monthly L.G.U. medal round on Wednesday. The following cards were returned:— Silver division—Mrs F. Motor-car Registrations For the last few days, the Kaikoura Post Office has had an exceptionally busy time with the registration of motor-cars and other vehicles. The total number of new registrations was 300, in comparison with about 220 for 1936. More than 330 drivers’ licences were issued last month LINCOLN CHESS CLUB The second annual meeting of the Lincoln Chess Club was held at the home of Mrs Button. Officers were elected as follows: — President, Mr J. W. Caldcr; vice-presi-dents. Dr. W. A. Johnston, Dr. I. W. Weston, and Mr S. Banks; committee, Mr S. Banks, Mrs Button, Mr G. Gillatt, jun.r secretary and treasurer, Mr R. Harris. The subscription for the year was fixed at 2s 6d. It was decided to hold a competition ladder. A trophy was given for .he most improved player for the season. Meetings will be held on-Friday evening of each week.

ACCESS TO SHARPLIN FALLS RESERVE

WORK ON ROAD EXPECTED TO BEGIN SOON The secretary of the Advance Sfaveley Association (the Rev. A. A. C. Lion) has received advice, through the Ashburton County Council, that there is every likelihood of the proposed road giving access to the Sharplin Falls scenic reserve being put in hand soon. The letter states that the Minister for Lands has approved of expenditure up to £SO on fencing for the new road, and also for surveying and legalisation of the road for the exchange of areas approved. The County Council will also contribute £3O towards fencing, and provide several crossings. The Sharplin Falls reserve Is the native bush nearest to Ashburton, and the Advance Staveley Association has been trying for two years to arrange suitable access. Rainfall In May Although the heaviest day’s rain was only 67 points, which fell on May 9, last month was again damp because of many days, 12, on which rain fell, the other cloudy days, and a lack of drying winds and bright sunshine. The month’s rainfall totalled 304 points, as against 119 points for May of last year. The total rainfall for the first five months of this and last year are 21.91 inches, and 27.38 inches respectively. Presbyterian Church To a meeting of the management committee of the Staveley Presbyterian Church, the Rev. A. A. C. Lion reported that the Greenstreet congregation intended to paint and repair its church, towards which it had in hand £ls, and was to raise the rest shortly. Members were appointed by the meeting to take up the annual sustentation collection. LICENSING COMMITTEE MEETS AT LEESTON The annual meeting of the Mid-Can-terbury 'Licensing Committee was held at Leeston yesterday. The members present were: Messrs H. A. Young, S.M. (chairman), S. G. Holmes, B. McNamara, E. Buchanan, H. F. Nicoll, and E. B. Newton. The application of W. H. Reddxngton for transfer of the licence of the Hororata Hotel to M. C. O’Sullivan was granted. The chairman said that the health and police reports were favourable. There had been only one conviction of a licensee during the year and since then the conduct of the hotel had been good. The committee was pleased to know that the law was being so well observed and that the requirements of the public were being so well attended to. All the applications for renewal of licences were granted. HURUNUI The annual meeting of the committee for the licensing district of Hurunui was held at the courthouse, Amberley, recently. Mr H. A. Young, S.M., was in the chair, and also present were’ Messrs S. Frew, C. W. Tyler, E. P. Shier, M. Bethell, and Taylor. MISSIONARY UNIONS MEET Mrs D. N. Pryor conducted the worship period and gave an interesting talk on the work and life of the Maori missionaries, at a meeting of the Brookside Presbyterian Women’s Missionary Union. A fine collection of garments was received for the Nurse Maude. Association, and it was decided to work for the Presbyterian girls’ orphanage this month. Miss Henderson, president of the Christchurch Presbyterian Association, gave an address at the monthly meeting of the newly formed Killinchy branch of the Presbyterian Women’s Missionary Union. Other visitors who

spoke were Mrs Mac Gibbon. past president of the Presbyterian Association, Mrs Fitzgerald, secretary, and Mrs Dodds. Afternoon tea was served.
