BRITAIN AND GOLD STANDARD
NO CHANGE IN POLICY OF GOVERNMENT RUGBY, June 3. In the House of Commons the Chancellor of the Exchequer (Sir John Simon) was asked to give the same assurance as was given by bis predecessor, that the country would not return to the gold standard until he was satisfied that the causes which brought about the downfall of the gold standard in' 1931 were removed, and were not likely to recur. Sir John Simon replied that the conditions necessary before a return to the gold standard would be possible had been clearly indicated in previous declarations which continued to represent the policy of the Government on that subject.
