EARTH TREMORS AT AUCKLAND

FIRST FOR SOME YEARS SHAKE NOT GENERALLY FELT (PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEORAM.) AUCKLAND, June 3. A prolonged earth tremor was felt at Auckland at 11.36 this morning, followed by another distinct shock at 12.13. There is no seismograph in the city, and consequently there is no record of its duration, but the first shock was felt in several parts of the city, notably in tall buildings. Office and factory equipment rattled, telephone bells rang, and light globes swung. In one tall building a table on the top floor moved several feet, rattling and wobbling. Reports indicate that many walls creaked, but the tremor was not of sufficient intensity to be generally observed. Some said that it lasted nearly 30 seconds or thereabouts. The second shake was not so generally felt. It is believed that the earthquakes were moving from east to west. It is some years since the last earthquake was felt at Auckland. A pronounced earthquake shock was felt at Taurama at 11.34 a.m. A gentle swaying was felt, moving from north to south. It was felt more severely on Mount Mrunganui and generally over the whole of the district. A sharp earthquake shock was felt throughout Thames and district at 11.30 a.m. Goods in previsions shops were thrown from the shelves, clocks were stopped, and light globes swayed for several minutes. Water in the wide drains on the Hauraki plains swished for some time. A further slight shock was felt at 12.15 p.m. A slight tremor occurred at 1215 p.m. at Waihi, followed by a short sharp shock at 12.50 p.m., apparently from the south-east. It lasted one or two seconds. No damage has yet been reported.
